Carbon build up symptoms

Post by Stevec33 » Wed Oct 16, 2013 3:45 pm

What are the noticeable symptoms of carbon build up? I wasnt sure if it was something that makes the car run much worse or if its difficult to tell at all? Ive read various things but thought id ask on here for a definite answer. Cheers

I guess it would be hard to tell unless you drive another one that's been cleaned. And see if it feels different to yours. I've had mine a year and only just booked it in for its first decoke on the 28th. I'll let you know if it feels any different.
Get it on a dyno and see if you're down on power or you could do the 3-8k test to see roughly if it's running about right.

I have had it carbon cleaned and I could not really tell any difference..do a search of the 3k-8k test...it will tell you how your car is performing to factory figures..

Yeah as Scag said, there's a lot of info on this forum on it, just search and spend sometime going through it.

But basically get a nice clear straight bit of road, put it in 3rd. Bring the revs up slowly and nail it when you hit 3k. Use the onboard lap timer to time how long it takes to get to 8k revs. Do a couple of runs and get an average time. Be careful though as 8k revs in 3rd is over 100mph.

Seems as though a standard car should be 8-8.5 seconds from what ive read, is that about right? Will test it asap

As already stated above, some people say it feels no different, some people say it feels more responsive, some sya quicker 3-8k, others say it's a placbo effect. I think the only clear cut difference is on a dyno, where you should see something close to quoted power after a clean assuming no vacuum issues etc.

Im not a fan of rolling roads, i just think that there is so many variables that its difficult to get realistic figures from them, also the fact that some tuners artifically make your car look like its making more power than it truly is after work has been done on it to make themselves look better, ive had my fingers burnt before. Have a look at this video to see how easy it is to change figures-http://youtu.be/lhaqaninU3s

Link dosent seem to work, if you go on YouTube and type in 'motorsport developments' you will see their video about dyno figure manipulation.

If you do go for dyno make sure you reset everything with Vag Com.
It's amazing the difference resetting the long fuel trim adjustment makes!
