does the car really warrant 11 grands worth of brakes where you most probably wont use to their full potential

I have the rear S7 ceramics on mine (to get the electronic parking brake functionality). No idea if they work for your application, but it's another option to investigate.

im around the 700hp mark on my b5 and i do track it now and again, its a heavy car and does take a bit of stopping, besides rusty discs are doing my head in. :biggrin2:

its your damn fault im on one with this, those red gt calipers look ace, i had a good look at them at aitp. :bigwave:

think im going to look for a full r8 gt setup for mine and maybe get smaller pistons fitted to the rear calipers. :biggrin3:

Probably not as straightforward as you think - the brakes are 4 channel so each wheel has it's own dedicated line back to the brake controller. The force going to each one is controlled from here so limited places to install a bias adjuster.

coffey555 wrote:Well that solves that one then. I guess you would want the bigger wheels anyway given the extra braking performance available.
Bigger wheels actually hurt braking performance. In general a wheel rim is heavier than the equivalent volume taken up with air and rubber. So the bigger the wheel the more mass. It also doesn't help that the mass is being moved further and further out from the wheel centre so the rotational inertia is also going up.
I remember talking to an engineer where they calculated the best wheel size for a particular sports car was 14" but the styling department simply refused.

Anyway - the tyre is exactly the same size regardless:
255/35 19R -> 661mm diameter
255/40 18R -> 661mm diameter
So in principal exactly the same amount of rubber will be on the road (a bit simplistic though).
I wonder if anyone on here is running 18's on their car and how it affects the ride quality?
Probably rides better as the larger profile would soak up the smaller bumps whilst the lower wheel mass would ever so slightly be able to move react faster to road surfaces.

Interesting, I wrongly assumed that the 18's would have a 235 section resulting in a smaller contact patch with the road but you are quite correct, they are indeed 255.

I had not considered the extra inertia of the bigger rim either.

So if I was to switch to 18's for winter use, theoretically I could adjust the compression and rebound settings to take into account the reduction in unsprung mass?

Yes - but in not sure on the actual weight difference. Be interesting to find out.
