On a slightly related question, anyone know how you remove the oil filter from the housing cap. I thought itwas a simpli twist and pull but mines not having any of it.

Last bit to do as well!

Odd one as I thought this too, but at last oil and filter changed the car took well over 10 litres (possibly even close to 11 from what I can remember (on digital gauge used). The car was on the ramps for over an hour so enough time to let all the oil drain out.

the most mine has taken (drained for >30 minutes and 'rocked') was ~9.5 liter, maybe 9.75
filled to 80% of fill to full
11 sounds like a lot

don't forget to check it hot ~ 5 minutes after shutdown
the volume changes a good bit with temp
20C 888.1 kg/m^3
100C 840.0 kg/m^3

so the since the mass stays the same the volume gets 888/840 ~ 1.06 0r 6% larger
so 10.5 liter cold ~ 11.1 liter hot...1/2 the dipstick range of ~ 1 liter...
I always put in 9.5 and toss a liter in the trunk
after I drive it the first time I check the level and top off to 80% fill to full...

Hadn't thought about expansion... Always did wonder why they specify hot in the manual.

just checked my oil consumption
same spot in the garage
car fully warm, oil >90 C
5 minutes after shutdown
<1/4 liter in ~4000 miles
started at 3/4 full, now at top of hatch marks
since I do a 5k change should not need topped off
<1 liter per ~16000 miles

That seems awfully low for a high output N/A revvy engine.

it is what it is...I'm anal when it comes to stuff like this... :)

not really surprising to me
large capacity (low dilution concentration)
small engine 4.2 liter
oil cooler and great filtration
excellent blow-by capture system
very good synthetic oil

never push until warm
the high compression helps, good ring seal

iirc there was a poll and many guys use very little oil...
my 951 drinks it 1 liter/2000 miles
e46 M3 ~1 liter/3000 miles (140k miles though)
no leaks, only engine consumption

only one way to know...
check it when hot, level ground, 5 minutes after shutdown
check it a few times to get consistent readings
my guess, you'll need 1/2 liter or so
fill to 3/4 fill to full marks

did not see this earlier, twist and pull
sometimes cock it at angle angle to get one side started/lifted
obviously wrap the filter with a rag :D

Probably not, that would be at min level. 9.6-10 litres is correct. I supplied 3x4 litre Castrol SLX III last week to my dealer and they returned just over 2L.
