slightly off topic guys but im thinking seriously about getting an rs4 but it will be my wife who drives it 90% of the time for work but her work is only at wort 2.5 miles from home........ would this be seriously bad for one of these as i have a 330d just now and i know its not doing the old oil burner any favors at all!!!

If I am doing short journeys I usually let the car sit with engine running for 10mins before taking it anywhere. So long you give the RS a decent blast once a week, Sunday mornings for example, it should be OK so long you don't stress it on the 2.5 mile commute.

try getting my wife to sit still for 10 seconds never mind 10 mins first thing in the morning would be impossible.... i tryed telling her to leave the 330 for a wee while on idle after a blast but it gets the key switched off as soon as it stops on the drive....... WOMEN!!

2.5 miles commute will be bad for ANY car - it's not going to get up to temperature so you almost certainly get condensation in the head/block which will lead to generation of an oil/water emulsion.

had that in the z4 we had before the 330........same commute thought it was head gasket and got rid but im pretty sure it wasnt in the end....... the only thing im worried about is these are far more expensive cars if anything goes wrong ...... oh and sorry for the hijack!!

Worst of 5.6  and best of 32.4. Seems fairly reflective of others!
Or should that be best of 5.6 and worst of 32.4!!

mfire, what were you doing to get 5.6mpg, apart from 180mph!?

Oh enjoying myself big time! Using about 70% of the abilties of the car but 100% of the performance! What fun! Cheers

just taken ownership of my RS, seeing 29mpg on average DIS (dont bother with live read out) setting on my daily motorway jaunt...23 miles with another 12 miles in total on A roads....but I never gun it for the 1st 5 miles really....infact I only have a few little red line blips on my daily run, because I take it easy up to the motorway, then drive at 60mph due to average speed cameras on on the m'way and then like to run her gently before switching off at my destination..! Is this the right approach guys? what sort of oil temp do people open their RS's up at and switch off at? hate the thought of coking or other temperature related damage... hope this isn't highjacking...it seems to be in keeping with the thread

R32 used to be around 31-32 on the motorway stretch so I am well chuffed at the RS!

Sounds like you are being plenty easy on her. Display tells you not to exceed 7000rpm until oil goes over 60oC so you should be okay. These cars are moving pretty quickly by 7000rpm so Audi must be pretty comfortable at that engine speed from cold.
On the cool down, this is more important on high performance turbo's, I used to let my STiPPP idle for a couple of minutes if I had been driving hard, or i would drive easy for the last 5 minutes of the journey
One thing to remember with big brakes is not to sit with you're foot on the pedal if you have just been working them hard as this will cause warping due to the size of the caplipers and pads and the heat being focused for to long on one part of the disk

Great cars, even driving slowly

I normally see an oil temperature in the range 96-104 after most drives.

cheers Les (used to let my MR2 tubby cool down too for a good 5 mins) - I feel that 7000 is crazy, I'd never rev the R32 upto 7k when cold!!
1) because the limiter kicked in at 6700 LoL
2) the thought of the pistons n crank being worked hard 5 mins into a long haul when nothings lubed :!: just grates me!

I like to warm her up first - aaiiiaght! the rewards are worth it :notworthy:

I fear warping the brakes too so thanks for the tip!!

good robust tank like German engineering on the one hand, fragile expensive moneypit if ill treated or not respected....

nearly home time...
