I also think the classic Quattro and Forced induction combination which Audi are World famous for keeps the B5 more in the "classic" category as the V8 whilst great as it is, it's too new and too temporary a solution. I can see a complete turnaround on the large engined fast Audi's in the future in favour for the smaller engined forced indution units.
I agree Contigo - B5 is now creeping towards classic status already( if I could afford it Id have kept both

) and although both cars are completely different I'm unsure the B7 will follow just down to the fact its already in the shadow of the original Rs4 and thats no disgrace as it is a truly great car. I dont think numbers have an impact in classic status as again mentioned there are thousand of mass produced classics out there. That said far to early to say obviously but if any one can think back the Capri ( I think mentioned) would have never been seen as a classic back then but now I think so ! I had one of those as well !! Damn it
