Doh!

So the next question is;-

Is the clutch switch only part of the circuit (as is the start button) pre start up?

If not is there anything else the switch operates?

I would think it's linked into the cruise control. Knocks off cruise if you press the clutch...

If all it is is a micro switch operated by the clutch peddle then it should be easy to strap it out, if it is easy to get to that is!!

I dont really see the point in the started button at all, on my old Touareg I had keyless entry and keyless start / stop which was really handy (especially for my wife when she had the keys in her handbag!!) Its the one thing i really miss on my RS4

Let's face it, on the RS4 the starter button is just a gimmick.
