Poxy stupid steering rack bolts.
Poxy stupid steering rack bolts.
Stupid bolt working it's way loose again...
One of the "magic three" bolts that are supposed to hold the steering rack in place. It's the one thats under the secondary ECU located hiding under the battery slidey cover thing under the bonnet.
They are tension style bolts so can't just keep doing it up otherwise will eventually break <sigh>
Tempted to thread lock the bloody thing in place (only blue not red).
FWIW though it sounds *exactly* like a fubar'd DRC - lots of low speed clonking/banging with the occasional creak over speed bumps.

Re: Poxy stupid steering rack bolts.
Bit of a pain, but removing the bolt & cross-drilling the head & wire-locking to adjacent structure could be a permanent solution. Bit extreme....? You'd only have to do it the onceadsgreen wrote:Stupid bolt working it's way loose again...

Poxy stupid steering rack bolts.

Poxy stupid steering rack bolts.
Wire lock and gunk the badboy!

Re: Poxy stupid steering rack bolts.
There's three.
Two near the steering column and one on the passenger side.
One of the steering column bots and the pax one are under the plastic panel that just pulls off under the bonnet.
Open the bonnet, take if the battery cover panel and then pull off the whole plastic plenum cover.
One is under the ecu and the other under the brake reservoir
The other is under the rack - need to access from the wheel arch.

Araldite 241 is what we use for thread lock buddy on our cabs. Gives enough adhesion to hold the bolt/screws while still allowing them to be removed without shearing! And yes it's should be blue in colour.

Bolts 2 and 6
Re: Poxy stupid steering rack bolts.
I prefer loctite blue myself

Re: Poxy stupid steering rack bolts.
I think we still use that in Lynx vertical stabiliser panels. Works just as well

Currently back in the West Country, but I've worked mainly in Belgium, Holland, Germany & France in Design & Manufacture. 42 years experience in total with 27 years as a money-grabbing subby. (Catia jockey)
Never a dull moment, & I've loved every minute of it. Met & made lots of real friends along the way.
A great career choice for a young engineer.
Only (slight) regret is not having followed my first love - architecture, but we've built a couple of houses so that satisfied that urge, up to a point.
What about you?

Yep had to tighten mine last month ... Every time I reversed off the drive or did a lock to lock manoeuvre I'd get that clunk ! As much as a pain they are to get to , it beats having to replace the rack

Re: Poxy stupid steering rack bolts.
What's the noise you are all referring to??
I noticed today when on full lock to the right I was getting a really bad clunking sound. Could feel it throught the steering wheel quite badly. Is this the same thing you are talking about???

Crikey, similar but im structures and modifications man and designer when it doesnt work
22 years at it and the last 12 or so as a subby.Built the hush hush aircraft that had a hand in finding Bin Laden and then arour plated the cockpit on the royal flight aircraft etc etc for whoever pays the best lol
Share your property design interest too,im in the middle of pretty much a new build (had to leave a few exterior walls as new build wasnt allowed with planners) its the biggest project by far ive done, way above what ive done with rip out and rent jobs but im pleased with it so far.
