Clutch Problems Maybe

Post by Petrolthreads » Thu Oct 01, 2009 10:21 pm

After a week in my RS4, I'm starting to get what I think is a clutch problem, very similar to the one I previously had on my S4.

The pedal has a about 2 inches of travel before it starts to bite, but the main issue is that it seems on occasion to not disengage properly as I come of the pedal. With the S4 if I remember it was some kind of valve or bellows (not a engineer as you can tell) I ended up with 2 new clutches before they worked that out.

Am I being paranoid, anyone else had this issue?

Audi's traditionally have high bite points, my A3, S3, S4 and now RS4 are all the same as is the wife's A2. Don't have the disengaging problem though.

I agree with P_G. It took me ages to get used to the RS4 bite point. It felt like I was slamming all the gears in.

I'm not sure what you mean about not disengaging? The clutch disengages as you press the pedal doesn't it? You then change the gear and then re-engage as you come off the pedal?

Dead right i got engages the wrong way round, as I come off there is on occasion a hesitation on the pedal coming up, take the point on the bite point but it seems like there is 2 inches of dead pedal travel before there is resistance to pressure, am i making sense?

Yeah, now you come to say it like that I get that sometimes too. Mainly when it's either a) cold or b) after I've given it a bit of welly for a few minutes. There are some threads knocking around about people saying the clutch pipe was originally too narrow to allow the fluid to return back quickly enough or something, and that Audi now fit a larger bore pipe if one comes in with the problem. But I've not had time, or the inclination, to think about it too much yet.

I'd be interested to know where you end up with this. Are you going to take it in?

I had the same and mine was the clutch pipe being too narrow problem. All fixed under warranty no problem.

Chaucer, can you explain more fully please? Is it an Audi mod? So if I just go into Manchester Audi and request the clutch return pipe mod they'll just fit it? I've already queried the clutch with them once but they said 'it feels fine'! I described it not returning properly to them and they never suggested the mod!

Any advice would be great.

Also, can you confirm the actual position re the DRC by any chance? Is there an extended warranty on them?

Update, Bedford Audi are replacing the pipe and the clutch under warranty next week, although not some other things which I hoped they would

I've had that a few times with mine, sometimes only 2-3 miles from startup, other times when it has been getting some stick.

So take it its a fault, not a recall?

Yes, I did ask that question, apparently "Audi keep a close eye on this kind of thing and recall if necessary" .

I would have thought replacing a few pipes would be cheaper than clutches but maybe I've just been unlucky.

ps I have a 2.0 tdi automatic courtesy car, what a dog to drive.
