Mauled an 2.5 '07 Sti WRX saloon today

Post by tartan_rob » Thu Jan 24, 2008 6:24 pm

Not so much on straight line, nothing in it 2nd and 3rd but 4th started to get the better of him.

But through a longer corner I had him. I nailed it in 4th and took a long corner quickly, he backed off and then would not pass at all.

I was surprised because they stick to the road like a shi.tty blanket and the new ones are very fast and they weight the same as a mug of coffee.

They are still around 1500kg - which is pretty similar to what your old S4 was (1540kgs)?

Those scooby's are getting a bit lardy aren't they? Must be all that quality materials they put in them now.

Perhaps it was tuned..? The RS4 felt quite quick yesterday and I was surprised. Below 5k I would have expected but but over 5k I did not expect him to be there or anywhere near. But one-the-less, 2nd and 3rd gear there was nothing in it. In hindsight it did have a big exhaust so may well have been tuned. Even though, it was quick.

Your car standard rob ?
I too would've thought you'd smash it ? Forced induction is one way of creating horsepower however cubic inches and the sound of the rs4 along with its quality build is sublime.
Go for a remap, not expensive and see the difference from standard OEM tune

My car is std. I was supposed to get cats stripped out and remapped by MRC in Dec but work got busy and I could not make the appointment. Jan was supposed to be quiet but that was not the case. So hopefully in Feb I can get up there.

Does anyone have a vid of a remapped RS4 running no cats?

The scooby's should not be underestimated but was surprised by how much slower he was through the fast corners.

STI has almost as much torque as the RS4, so in terms of off the line acceleration, the STI will be ahead initially...STI also has much shorter gearing than the RS4 which helps in terms of acceleration...

They tested the 2.5L International Spec down here in New Zealand recently (NZ Autocar), 0-100km/h in 5.11s vs 4.62s for the RS4 back in early 2007...big difference...80-120km/h which generally tells a better story was 3.2s for the STI vs 3.0s for the RS4 (out of interest the E92 M3 ran 0-100 in 4.95s but a quicker 2.85s for 80-120)...

I duelled with an EVO X the other day, it was slow, the International Spec weighs over 1600kgs with full tank, which accounts for its tested time of 0-100 in 5.5s (80-120 in 3.4s) - NZ Autocar tested again...

I used to own an STI Spec C (1390kg kerb weight) modified to 325WHP and I must say on the track it was hard work hauling in RS4 Avants - if the Spec C was in stock trim (260WHP) the RS4 would have been quicker around the track. I was really surprised how well they went and is part of the reason I went for an RS4.

Sorry to partially hijack the thread....

So Mr P Rips, have you taken the Audi plunge?

These days with many cars in the sub 6 sec 0-60mph bracket, a far better indication of how the respective cars are going to fare against each other has to be the 0-100 mph time, or, as already mentioned, the 40-80mph or 80-120mph etc bracketed times.

If you screw up the launch or fudge a gear-change, a genuine 4.5 sec car will easily become a 5.5 sec car...

I have to say for me, the exciting part of the rev range in the RS4 is 5500+ and a remap will make absolutely no difference (IMHO) to how the car feels above this point whilst accelerating in the lower gears because by then the car is producing about 85% of its max power, we know remaps are giving ~5% gains, and you're only in any particular gear for a short period of time...

But then again the two cars represent two different paradigms...

Turbocharged Scooby with a WRC pedigree - torque is king, and the NA B7 RS4, which basically doesn't come alive until 5500rpm on the tacho and is basically a bored but de-tuned DTM V8 road car.

Interestingly, NA 4L DTM cars are artificially restricted to 470hp so our 4.2 ought to be able to produce (as mentioned before by me) >~480hp.

Sorry, but for someone who claims to own an RS4, you seem extremely quick to criticise it at every opportunity.

Why don't you log off before your dad catches you on his computer. This is me wording this politely!

Better still, can one of the mods please have a word with this guy? He's clearly a crank along with being delusional and tedious at best.

I love this guy...where in my post does it say I beat this guy in a straight line...? I said I could not get away from him. Can you read?

As the guys have already said, time to get off the computer before your dad catches you on it and indeed, is it not time for your nappy change?
