Whats the purpose of the DRL's?
Whats the purpose of the DRL's?
Hi guys
Just can't get this one...
The Daytime Running Lights - why are they on the RS4? Why not just turn on your normal lights?
I'm obviously missing something....only have the car a few weeks.
Thanks!

RE: Whats the purpose of the DRL
DRLs are different from sidelights in that you don't have to turn them off when you get out of the car. Personally I don't see the point of them but at least they're not as annoying as the new DRLs on the A5 etc...

RE: Whats the purpose of the DRL
They are there for more visability from the other road users point of veiw, this may become law soon for all new cars to have them ON, they can cause uninvited extra attention, I keep mine off.

RE: Whats the purpose of the DRL
I have started using mine all the time as they look good and different position to the side lghts (or just brighter)...

have to say I had a new S6 come up behind me the other day and I soon moved over! however I would worry about unmarked rozzers seeing you coming a mile off!! Can't miss those LED's. the RS4's are more discrete though
safety I guess is the main reason, Volvo and I think Saab have been doing it for years. Bit like xenons though, I'm sure in time everyone will have them.

I always have mine on, and i've got it set so that the rear lights come on too (done via VAG-com -based on a previous post on here). I like the look, but not as much as the LED's on my wifes S5. They are stunning!!!!!

How do you compare the S5 with the RS4 Nipper?. I will have the use of the S5 tomorrow.Nipper wrote:I always have mine on, and i've got it set so that the rear lights come on too (done via VAG-com -based on a previous post on here). Re: RE: Whats the purpose of the DRL
In some European countries driving with some form of lights other than "parking lights" (often know as side lights) is compulsory, and DRLs are a less glaring option than driving with headlights on all the time (who isn't annoyed by the always on headlights of older Volvos?).theaxe wrote:DRLs are different from sidelights in that you don't have to turn them off when you get out of the car. When we went to France earlier this year I turned the DRLs on so I couldn't be accused by the Gendarmes of driving without lights when it was raining (whose definition of is it raining was an argument I wasn't prepared to have...).
RE: Re: RE: Whats the purpose of the DRL
Audijohn, I'm quite impressed by the S5. It's a really nice car to be in. The interior is stunning and quality and fit wise on a par with the RS4. The car is high spec, with B&O, Keyless entry, Sat Nav+, Parking Advanced with camera etc and so technology wise is far superior to the RS4. In performance terms the RS4 is in a different league though, as you'd expect, but nevertheless the S5 goes about it's business without any fuss or drama. In a straight line is only marginally slower and the engine is slightly torquier, but it's cornering were the differences ultimately show.
Overall though I'm v impressed. The B8 S4 and RS4's will certainly be eagerly anticipated.

RE: Re: RE: Whats the purpose of the DRL
I have mine on as my RS4 is Daytona grey and where I live it is grey all the time. People do move out of the way - not sure if its the lights or the noise that makes 'em move over.
RE: Re: RE: Whats the purpose of the DRL
Its compulsory to drive with the lights on 24/7 all year in Poland. DRLs use less energy than xenons - probably not much of a difference in a single car, but imagine the savings if some 10 or more million cars save 1% of their petrol.
