Wiper Motor??

Wipers sometimes take on a life of their own and go about four times instead of once when you hit the stalk down and sometimes stop in the middle of the window. This happened ages ago but they started working properly and once again about a month ago but are fine now. I have heard that the switch is actually inside the wiper motor and that the motor will need replaced. Ideas? Cost for a new one? Easy to fit?

about £70 quid from memory, a bit fiddly but relatively easy to fit

check that the nuts on the linkage are still tight. Mine stopped working once and it turned out that
the nut on the cam from the motor had undone itself.

I was just wondering if it could be the control unit, aka Wiper Relay as all control wiring for the Wash Wipe switch and motor goes through J31 - wiper relay.

Wiper stalk (switch) -> Relay (aka "control unit") -> Wiper Motor.

I replaced my motor - wipers just stopped one day after a period of being "lethargic". Bought it from VagParts.

A fiddle to get it out and the new one back in but not too bad - I did it myself without referring to how anywhere - took about an hour or so I guess. Only tip is to make sure you examine how the linkage parts attach to the motor and themselves before you take it apart as there's a right way and a wrong way...

I had similar lethargic wipers, even on full speed; turned out to be the frame siezing up, so didn't have to replace the motor thankfully.

I fixed the same symptoms by cleaning the "slide switch" thingy located on the wiper motor. A couple of sliding contacts that tell the engine where to stop.

Gave mine a squirt with Fospro on all linkages now sorted.
