Changing Gearbox & Diff Oils
Changing Gearbox & Diff Oils
I'm going to change my gearbox and diff oils maybe this week....
What oils do i need ?
Anyone done it and can give me some tips ? I've changed gearbox and diff oils before on other cars but not Audi's.

I think you need to see that opieoils are doing their final sale of the year at the moment, and advertising in the Classifieds.

RE: Changing Gearbox & Diff Oils
Adam, Im doing exactly the same mate! The oil needs to be GL 4/5 if you want to use the same oil in box the gearbox and rear diff, and the Motul Gear 300 comes recommended @ around £13 per litre.
Audi told me that I would need 4l for the gear box and 1.5l for the rear diff - from what ive read the gearbox is anything from 2.5 to 3.2 so you can make your own mind up.
You may also need a special 'bit' to get the filler/drain plugs out - cant be certain on this as ive not been under the car to have a look. But the tool was only a few quid.
The is a write up here for an A4 - http://www.audiworld.com/tech/misc.html 6th and 7th article down.

Re: Changing Gearbox & Diff Oils
You'll need 3.5l for gearbox and 1.9l for the diff. Get the millers crx competetion oil. It will convert how the box feels. Much easier gear changes and better protection than the audi lard.AdamS4 wrote:I'm going to change my gearbox and diff oils maybe this week....

CRX 75w90 for the box and CRX 80w140 for the diff
The change is the same as on other cars but you need drive the car for a few meters and then top up the box again because of the oil cooler and pipes. Or you could also turn a wheel.

RE: Re: Changing Gearbox & Diff Oils
i did mine couple months ago and stuck 3.2 ltrs in gearbox using motul gear 300. iirc you don't fill the gearbox up like conventional ones where it starts to drip out of the filler hole when you know its full. I measured out the 3.2 ltrs and added it that way. I only live 15mins from Opieoils so its ideal location plus being on here qualifies for members discount as well.

Reaper, Did the Gear 300 make any non-placebo difference?

It feels pretty smooth now when changing gear also the old gear oil was hanging when it was drained. Mate is mechanic in motorsport industry and he recomended me to use this and opie oils was cheapest i saw at the time Think works out at £45 ish (with members discount for being on RS246.com) for 4 ltrs.JonnyX wrote:Reaper, Did the Gear 300 make any non-placebo difference?

When fully drained i also removed diff nut since my gearbox was out whilst having the new tubbies put on i used a bit of the spare fluid to flush out any old stuff till it came through clear.
