Which oil for the 6? 30, 40 or 60?

Post by Shoppinit » Fri Feb 19, 2010 11:14 pm

I'm trying to get my head around the different oil grades. Not interested in brands.

Manual says 5w40 VW505.01
Audi put in 5w30 VW507.00 last time I had an oil change
Some people swear by 10w60

60 sounds awfully thick to me. I used to put 50 in my mk3 escort to stop it smoking :shock:

Am I OK on 5w30?

I do my own oil changes and researched this a while back.

I chose Mobile Edge 5w/30. Two reasons;

It was recomended on here and it is available over the shelf from Halfords.

Hope this helps

I also do my own oil changes and use 5w40 VW505.01 simply because this is the manufacturers recommended oil for the car.

This logic appeals to me, but I believe that the 505.01 (some of which is 5w30, but most is 5w40) has been superceded by the 507.00 which is all 5w30. This didn't exist when the original recommendation was made.

In that case it must be safe to assume that the new 507.00 must be compatible, if not better than the older 505.01 spec oil? Personally I will be sticking to the 505.01 for at least the next 3 oil changes as I recently bought a 25 litre drum of the stuff!

If you want your engine to last platinum 5w40 fully synthetic can not be beaten!! The 40 indicates the thicker viscosity at opperating temperature! The specially formulated 1.9 tdi pump Duse oil was originally recommend, from day 1! Pd cam lobes were subject to higher opperating loads/increased friction! So it was advised for use in the rs6 engine to ruduce cam lobe wear!!! Platinum 5w40 is a pd oil! 0w30 is like tap water! Ok to use but I'd pass!
