Manual says 5w40 VW505.01
Audi put in 5w30 VW507.00 last time I had an oil change
Some people swear by 10w60
60 sounds awfully thick to me. I used to put 50 in my mk3 escort to stop it smoking

Am I OK on 5w30?
This logic appeals to me, but I believe that the 505.01 (some of which is 5w30, but most is 5w40) has been superceded by the 507.00 which is all 5w30. This didn't exist when the original recommendation was made.skyegtb wrote:I also do my own oil changes and use 5w40 VW505.01 simply because this is the manufacturers recommended oil for the car.
In that case it must be safe to assume that the new 507.00 must be compatible, if not better than the older 505.01 spec oil? Personally I will be sticking to the 505.01 for at least the next 3 oil changes as I recently bought a 25 litre drum of the stuff!Shoppinit wrote:This logic appeals to me, but I believe that the 505.01 (some of which is 5w30, but most is 5w40) has been superceded by the 507.00 which is all 5w30.
