Axle stands.......

Post by SpeedSix » Thu Oct 22, 2009 5:30 pm

Hi Guys

Need to get my two front wheels repaired (Thanks to a quality tyre fitter ) but as Im away next week I am going to take my wheels off and the leave the car in my garage on stands whiles the wheels go away. What does everyone suggest for the best stand to use and where to put them.

Thanks a lot in advance!!!

Dont think there is any real differance in axle stands brand to brand. any would do but make sure they have a good enough weight rating would be the only thing i can think of to look for. as for placement under the car? anywhere forward that is a strong part of the chassis. Like the mounts where the ARB bolts to the chassis.

There are a few pics of where I put my axle stands on the above write up I did a while back about fitting Hotchkis. Just make sure you use fairly substantial stands, rated 2 ton each is best. You will notice I position the axle stands on the cars jacking points. This works well for me as I use trolley jacks to lift the car. Hope this helps, Angus

Hmmm. Angus, if you use the jacking points to put the axle stands on, where do you put the trolley jacks? Do you lift it a corner at a time or front/back with 1 jack (if you follow what I mean!)? :)

I lift it kind of simultaneously (using my 2 trolley jacks) first at the front then the rear. I use the lifting points that are designed for scissor lifts, they are further underneath the car than the jacking points which allows good clearance to get axle stands underneath. The picture below should illustrate this I think.
