Continuing gearbox, not quite perfect.
Continuing gearbox, not quite perfect.
After replacing oil tube 0501 315 340, (with amazing guidance from Shop) my second gear "flaring revs" and slamming gears have all but disappeared.
It still doesn't accelerate properly in second though, (third actually pulls better), so I'm going to get whichever oil tube is the next contender.
Does anyone know if 0501 315 341,
0501 315 342,
0501 315 343 or
0501 315 344, is the next favourite?
I've got prices from EXB, and I'll replace the lot, if need be.
Cheers, Phil.

Re: Continuing gearbox, not quite perfect.
I think I'd just do the lot. In for a penny...

Re: Continuing gearbox, not quite perfect.
If you don't do all of them the law of sod will dictate whichever you don't do will decide to misbehave once you've put it all back together anyway....
Re: Continuing gearbox, not quite perfect.
Righty o. That's decided then. Almost perfect gearbox, here I come.(I'm going to be realistic here)
Re: Continuing gearbox, not quite perfect.
It might be worth checking the valve body over for wear first. Some of the little springs and ball valves.

Re: Continuing gearbox, not quite perfect.
Have you inspected the filter, where it attaches to the gearbox. My mate had the same symptoms, replaced the pipes etc, was on a very new box too, turned out the filter body had a crack in it, pump must have been drawing in some air.
Re: Continuing gearbox, not quite perfect.
Cheers for the replies.
I changed the oil and filter myself when I bought the car in 2016.
Made no difference.
And I'm guessing, again in 2019 when it had torque converter, clutch packs and seals.
Still, the revs flared in second and was slow to change gear.
I put a tested valve body on in 2020/21.
No difference.
Then I changed the smallest oil pipe and it cured the second gear slip by 95%.
When I get someone to fit these pioes, it'll obviously have another filter, so either way (fingers crossed) it should be as good as new..

Re: Continuing gearbox, not quite perfect.
Fingers crossed that fixes it all.
Re: Continuing gearbox, not quite perfect.
<beep>. Just finished changing all 5 pipes and used the ZF fluid change kit.
Complete with instructions.
I followed the filling procedure for just a fluid change (I also did that when I replace just one pipe a while ago).
There was smoke coming from the fill hole, not long after initial fill and start up, and it smelled burnt. (Can't remember if that happened before).
No funny noises though.
It took all 7 litres of lifeguard 5 and still needs more.
Which I guess i should have known.
No starvation, even when i lowered the front end down and drove it off the ramps.
And now.... it goes forward in reverse. Bollox.
No codes and drives well through the gears.
It seems doomed.
Any ideas would be welcome, cheers.

Re: Continuing gearbox, not quite perfect.
Just read a piece on Gears website and it all make so much sense, NOW.
Pretty sure either pump or converter is literally, toast.

What’s the diagnosis?

Re: Continuing gearbox, not quite perfect.
Still not sure. I'm (clutching at straws) going to activate the solenoids tomorrow and also make sure the shifter matches what VCDS says.
Seems strange that it drives in all forward gears, although, presumably, reverse might have took the hit on dry, intial start up.
If that's possible.

Re: Continuing gearbox, not quite perfect.
There's at least one click from all available solenoids.
F125 reports
P 1000
R 0100
N 1110
D 1011
S 0111
Solenoid 1,2 and 3 read O
Pressure control valves and TCC - 0.048A
TC open on idle.
When turning off engine in park there is a lurch forward.
So, just a heads up to anyone doing work to their trans and draining more than a fluid change amount.
Looks like there needs to be instant fluid refill and possibly going through and holding the gears on initial start up.
There's obviously a ZF procedure for a dry trans, but it's too late for me.

Re: Continuing gearbox, not quite perfect.
Arse. You think the damage is done?
Could you have misaligned the atf pump when installing?

Re: Continuing gearbox, not quite perfect.
I really do.
I only dropped the valve body, to replace the pipes.
I'm guessing it's not incorporated into that?
I didn't (and couldn't see a way) to remove the F125 shaft that spans the width of the transmission.
I had to bend the old pipes to get them out passed it.
Then pooping myself, do the same to the new ones.
Nothing too severe.
Just gentle curves.
I think the smoke that started a few seconds after start up speaks volumes.
