RS6 Resuscitation
Re: RS6 Resuscitation
Could very well be the turbo, this would make a rather nice smoke cloud. If it is the turbo, get both done at the same time!

Remove your bottom intercooler hoses to see how much oil is in them.

Re: RS6 Resuscitation
Check the state of the actual coolers as well while there, make sure they aren't leaking.

Re: RS6 Resuscitation
Can turbos leak from the hot side too or just the cold side?
From what I've read these engines are virtually bulletproof so I guess it's quite likely a turbo.

Re: RS6 Resuscitation
Yeah, you can blow a seal on the hot side, letting oil directly onto the turbine wheel. This is pretty hot

Re: RS6 Resuscitation
I've seen it run and drive before, but never saw any smoke from the exhaust then, although it was quite brief.
It only smokes when driving, not idling.
The garage are going to check the breather pipe and check the turbo pipes to see whether there's any oil in there.
If a turbo had gone, wouldn't it show up in the car fault codes? Because there was no mention of it when I scanned it before it went to the garage.
Are there any other obvious ways to check whether the turbos are the culprit?
The intercoolers did have some black oil stains at the bottom but it looked like a minor amount.
Could it be something to do with the fact that its been sitting for so long? Or all the new parts and valves, etc?
Could it be the cat? Could a load of oil get into them?

Re: RS6 Resuscitation
I looked at a car last week, on start up it smoked badly and slightly when being driven, my guess was turbos or valve stem seals, maybe more stem seals
Guessing when on boost and higher oil pressure while driving could be forcing oil out of your turbine seals, I'm no expert on these and couldn't ansewer about a breather problem

Re: RS6 Resuscitation
I hope you're all enjoying the festive season
The right hand side turbo has definitely gone! I'm currently on the hunt for a pair of turbos, with OEM ones from Audi costing around 6k, I need an alternative. I've searched the forum and online, I've found a few German companies on eBay offering new OEM influenced turbos, I don't suppose anyone on the forum has gone down this route and bought such turbos?
The cheaper option would be to remanufacture the turbos but I'm not sure how long they'll last for. Nevertheless, CR turbos are offering to re-furb and hybridise my turbos for 330-390 each, depending on condition, which should apparently increase BHP by 50-80. Has anyone got any experience with refurbished turbos? If so, who did the work? Has it been plain sailing? Or were you thrown overboard?...
I also feel that I should change the gearbox now whilst I've got the engine out, even though the gearbox seems fine, I know it's only a matter of time.
It's not all bad news, now that I'm having to take the engine out, I've decided to milk the opportunity and gone and bought a nice Milltek decat down pipe, with matching non resonated black tip system. Has anyone else fitted the complete system? Does your car pop and bang? *mind the pun* I can't wait to hear the new system!
I've also got some KW intercoolers for £600 from eBay, went with these because they are slightly bigger than Wagner intercoolers and, similar build quality on the welds, especially the end tanks but at a cheaper price than the equivalent Wagners (got the hoses from Wagner though). I don't suppose anyone else on here has fitted these intercoolers?

Re: RS6 Resuscitation
If the reman is done by a reputable company, I'd have no issue with a reman one. (In fact had a garrett one rebuilt by owen developments, who did a lovely job, earlier in the year)
If it's just seals and otherwise in good order, that's gotta be worth doing?

Re: RS6 Resuscitation
Cheers for the links. Yeah i saw both of these, but are based overseas which is putting me off.
The condition of my turbos isn't that bad. The left hand side turbo is fine and i think the right hand turbos seal has probably gone so I'll probably go down the route of refurbing the turbos.
Who's the most reputable turbo reconditioner? Who have you guys had your turbos refurbed by? Anyone tried CR Turbos before?
I'll check out Owen developments
