It's a messy job, but straight forward enough if you can get the car lifted.

I had Grizz do my gearbox last year, mine was around the same mileage when it started playing up. Nearly a year on and it is still sweet and has never missed a beat. I spoke to the guys at Chester Automatics (think that's what they are called) who rebuilt the box for Grizz and they seemed to know their stuff. I would definitely go to him to sort the box out and get any other annoying faults sorted while he has the engine out.

if i had someone like Grizz here i wouldn't even consider going to someone else, think of it on a long run, even if it will cost you a bit more in the end i am pretty sure you'll be satisfied and have peace of mind afterwards! My engine and gearbox are out as we speak for a torque converter replacement, be prepared for additional costs as there will be a few seals, gaskets, EGT sensors, O2 sensors, oil cooler pipe, maybe engine/gearbox mounts and other bits that will need(MUST) be addressed if you wanna keep the car longer and besides a good chunk of money it will take time as many of the small parts are not in stock at the Audi dealerships and will have to be ordered from Germany, mine is been apart for almost 1 month now due to some silly turbo gaskets and cooling pipe o-rings which were nowhere to be found but Germany! I am also gambling as i have chosen not to refurbish the gearbox as it didn't slip, hopefully will not start afterwards due to the new converter :) !

Drummerman ; purely out of interest, do Unit 20 not actually carry out the rebuild themselves ? It's CA that physically undertakes the work ?

Grizz wouldn't strip and rebuild the box. He would remove and fit.

Unit 20, just like MRC/AMD or any other specialist will send the gearbox to a specialist to be refurbished, or in the case of Audi, just slap a new one in. A gearbox specialist will be able to remove and refit though. Chester Auto Transmissions are very good, they also have a high tech machine for doing a proper gearbox flush when doing an oil change.

Dead fluid or a clogged filter, or both would be my optimistic guess. I ran 10 litres of fluid through my box, and had a detergent / seal conditioner in there for 1000 miles when i serviced my box. All was much happier by the end of the treatment.

Thanks folks - first step is to get flush and replace fluids and filter....hopefully this will work :-)

Can anyone confirm suitable products for the flush and oil?

Get the filters/oil from Audi or TPS. Who is doing the flush, try Chester Auto. They have the machine to do it properly.

Read this review on Chester Auto

This is interesting, too. (Bloke took his car to ZF to have it done).
