Here's a scenario that's not too far-fetched:

1. Car develops gearbox fault. F125 breaks and car goes into limp.
2. Owner takes it to garage who incorrectly diagnose it and suggest ATF change.
3. ATF incorrectly done, fluid level way too low.
4. Garage says "not our fault, there was always a chance that the ATF change wouldn't fix it. You need a new box."
5. Owner says, "screw that" and sells it to MG for peanuts.
6. MG puts a couple of litres of ATF in, changes the F125 and it's as good as new.

:)
I wish :biggrin3:

The car that came with a money back guarantee... £8.68's worth :D

Image

I thought that 2004 cars came with the later stereo?

Image

Amongst the cash above, I found 4 stereo removal keys (the type that like to try to cut your finger tips off!) and the stereo wasn't fully pushed back so someone else has already been in here to look around.

This is what's behind...

Image

An extra loom that has nothing to plug into?

And some alterations to the original loom, an extra plug that has heat shrink over it along with some audio connectors.

Anyone know what's going on with this?

Looks like it may have had a RNS-E or aftermarket. Innit.
No matter where you go, there you are.

More history on the car from the HPI.

It has had several private plates on it... including:

DFC 266 from new until Feb 2004 (yes a whole month!)
D17 MJM from 2008 - 2009
R56 AAC from 2009 - 2011
R1 NCK from 2011 - 2014
Obviously it had it's current plate in between the above and after.

Have a look behind the glove box (5 bolts to get it off) - it might have a box with a lead coming out (3.5mm jack) for plugging in your music into, instead of the CD changer.

That yellow plug in you hand slides on to the blue and green one to form a single mega plug, which then goes in the back of the stereo... were they pulled out and separated already?

I wonder if the previous owner sold the mirrors and rnse to get some money to pay for repairs?
previous- Pug 205 gti, 306 gti, 309 gti Goodwood.
Audi S3, S4 V8 avant.
Porsche Macan Turbo.
Gone but NEVER forgotten - C5 RS6 Misano red avant.

Now - Empty garage

If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there!

The connectors and wiring is exactly as I found it. There's no where for any of the above plugs to fit into in the back of the RNS-D

There is a wire kicking around the passenger footwell with a phone connector on it. I presume that's it.

Maybe. It's messy whatever has been done.

A little more history thanks to AA Performance in Bolton (Thank you for being so helpful guys!).

It was registered under reg R56 ACC at the time.

They owned the car (they're a car dealer as well) and photocopied the service book before selling it on.

As such, I've now got the service history up until 2010 which includes a timing belt change at 85k. Although it's not due on mileage alone, it's now 7 years old! Thankfully it had a water pump and all of the rollers at the same time. Of course, it could have had another timing belt in between then and now, but I have no way of telling that.

Moving forwards... the question is really what to do next.

In all honesty, I've bought this car as a spare donor.

It's had a hard hit and been written off as a Cat C in 2014. I have no history as to where the damage was but as I only really want this for spares, that's not important to me.

My choices are:

1) Pull the engine and gearbox out, replace torque converter and check the gearbox for the normal issues. Put back together and drive for a bit to check that everything is ok before pulling it apart. Then I can sell the gearbox as a good running setup inc test drive.

2) Bollocks to it, just pull it apart and have done!

How much so 2nd hand RS6 gearboxes fetch?

I think that I might do the following:

Replace the gear selection switch (F125) as I think I have a spare one from an S8 gearbox.

Check and top up the gearbox oil.

If it still doesn't move... pull it apart.

There is one flaw with the above... I don't get to test the engine fully... hmmm

Fairly sure we have the same stereo so this is how mine was setup prior to an upgrade (you can see the aftermarket plug that you had in your hand)

If it helps, the proper audi harness (black, nicely taped up etc) fits into that red adaptor, then the yellow, green and blue segments all combine and fits into the stereo.
