Non c5 'RS6' project
Non c5 'RS6' project
Just a bit of fun. During a conversation with a dealer contact they mentioned that they had a 2021 RS6 in the Shop where the owner had somehow hydrolocked the engine, big puddle was all the detail I could get.
Anyhoo I asked what's happening with the ex-engine and he said scrap. So for a box of Heineken I've got a complete but apparently bent RS6 long block.
I'm looking forward to taking an engine apart without worrying about putting it back together.
The plan is to see if I can do the old engine block coffee table setup. Will post pics of the carnage when I reach it.

I wonder if it was Rufford Ford? The number of absolute clackers that drive through there is amazing.
You might get it running then you can pop it on a lawnmower base and create the fastest lawnmower in the world

Friend of mine had his C7 PE engine replaced FOC by Audi because of excessive oil consumption. I really wanted to get his old engine back to put it in my Range Rover.

Re: Non c5 'RS6' project
Cracked into the engine. Interesting valve train, no valve covers per se, the valve cover doubles as the camshaft carrier with the cam lobes acting directly down onto a pretty beefy neddle bearing within the rocker arm. "Sir your valve cover has a leak, that'll be $1500 per side to remedy..." F that.
Engine must have been locked up as it wasn't on TDC and with no timing chain master link accessible out comes Mr Grinder. That's just to get the valve cover/cam setup off.
Heads were easy.
Then I found the culprit. Water indeed found its way into the engine. The last interesting (sort of) detail is that the engine has iron liners, otherwise it looks like a very stout unit. MLS head gasket, with 13 or 14 mm OD head bolts.
Next step is to turn the engine over, I'll just tip it out onto the lawn, and attack the bottom end *giggidy* My guess is that rods 6 &7 are going to be a little out of shape..

Re: Non c5 'RS6' project
I don't see any signs of issues with the oil that would indicate damage or contamination of oiled components. I wonder if there's any market for the unused components. No need for the heads and everything within. Rods and pistons may be used as stands for the glass or 'legs' for the block.

Re: Non c5 'RS6' project
How long did it sit with water in it? It's quite rusty.
Re: Non c5 'RS6' project
So the engine is fully dismantled I let my boy loose on it with an impact gun. Interesting case. Firstly, any fasteners not significant, like a headbolt, we're all the same which would be awesome if I was putting it back together.
The dealer was vague on the actual cause of the engine replacment but the main points discussed centre around water going where it shouldn't.
There is no obvious signs of hydraulic lock, conrods "look" straight, but as they're cast with a wavy casting line it's hard for the eye to pick up any major deviation.
Ostensibly everyting looks perfect, oil is a bit darker than I'd expect for a car of this value, but who knows.
What I have found that's not good is the water in the cylinders, sump and detritus in the oil galleries. Most significant of which is flotsam in the crank oil galleries.
It has had a significant flooding, I reckon it went in and then stalled getting stuck in the water for a time, enough time for water to make its way throughout the engine.
Big end bearings show barely any wear, just look at how fresh the main cap bearings are!
The next update will be a closer look at the conrods and close ups.of the gunk in the crank galleries.

Re: Non c5 'RS6' project
I'd be tempted to put it back together with a new head gasket and see what kind of compression you get.
Would be nice to get the engine running. Maybe you could use a electric ignition kit and some carbs to get it running to see what's what.
Fun projet.

Re: Non c5 'RS6' project
Yeah I may reconsider the whole coffee table thing if the rods look ok, though only as spares to sell.
