Indicators turning off

If I put the indicators on on my 2000 B5, they turn themselves off after about 4-6 flashes......this is sitting in a straight line, without moving the wheel and the indicator arm self cancelling.

I don't believe it is the indicator arm contact as it makes no difference if i hold it in position.

The hazards work well...so i concluded it may be a fault with the seperate flasher control unit.

Has any one had this problem before or know where the unit is located, I assume from the noise it is behind the dash.

i thought the flasher unit was part of the hazard warning switch but i'm open to being proved wrong

Hhhmm maybe it is? hazards are not a problem, when switched on they stay on.....it is only the indicators which turn themselves off aftera few clicks....very odd..

The car just went through 50k miles, maybe it is now on the slippery slope to the breakers yard?

It's only a baby, mine's on 122k and going strong. do they always perform the same number of clicks before switching off?, does the stalk return to the centre position if you don't hold it?

Yes, on most recent model Audis, the flasher relay module is integral with the hazard switch. Yours is exhibiting the typical failure pattern - indicators flash becomes intermittent while hazards continue to work perfectly.

Having dismantled the module from my wife's A2 (which has a relay separate from the hazard switch) I find that there are two small relays and little bit of electonic componentry on a circuit board. One relay (single pole) is used for the indicators (and has severely burnt contact), the other (double pole) is used for the hazards, and appears to be pristine.

Dave, stalk stays where it is when in a straight line and returns as usual on self centering of steering wheel, i was only holding it to make sure the contacts were fully home?

peterb, does the hazard switch just pull out of the dash? I could at least make sure the contacts are clen.

Yep, once you get the trim off - it's just plugged in.

It's a facelift b5,when you say trim....does that top piece just pull off away from the rest of the surround? cheers....I didn't want to get too heavy handed

Yes, if you are careful, pull the bottom part out first I think

I managed to get the surround off, using a credit card.......how on earth does the hazard warning switch come out...i couldn't see any clips on it....reluctantant to lever it in case i snap an important small plastic part.......thanks in advance for your help guys...

It looks like the unit is all in one no sign of a relay?

I looked on search and found a hazard switch part number

Does any one know if this is for a unit on a facelift car please?

That is correct - the relay is incorporated into the back of the switch.

8D0 941 509 H appears to be specified for the B5 models, including RS4, from 98 to 02. The catalogue description is 'hazard warning light switch relay turn signal/emerg.light'.
