TV Screen...

Post by Alan » Thu Feb 05, 2004 12:46 pm

Does anyone know how to enable the TV screen in an RS6 whilst on the move?
I ask as I want to fit a DVD player in the glovebox for the other half to amuse herself with whilst on a journey, surely it must be possible using VAG-com or something?
My installer tells me that normally the patch lead supplied does this but on Audi's it doesn't?

I believe you need to put a switch in the GALA circuit (the one that tells your nav that you're moving at a certain speed). This will prevent the NAV from working but you'll be watching a DVD anyway.
I think I read it on TVWIZ.NET

Certainly it is the speed signal which needs to be disconnected to enable picture whilst on the move. This will also disable the GALA facility. I don't think it will stop the Nav from working, but it may render the dead reckoning somewhat suspect. Dead reckoning should allow the Nav system to function for a while in the absence of satellite reception. The Nav+ apparently incorporates gyros to support DR, and may possibly use the speed signal to supplement to gyro data.

Hmmm.

Thanks guys, so if I understand correctly, the speed signal needs to be turned off.
Would this be a permanent thing i.e. all the time or is there a way of doing it ONLY when using the TV or DVD?

Thanks for the link Ben, I'll have a trawl over there

In the RS4 the GALA wire is a white and blue wire that is in position 1 in a black 8 pin plug.

Might you have you put a switch in yours then?

I did this to my RS and it was OK but I lost the ETA details on the Sat Nav+ and gained an error on the instrument cluster that meant the top part of the DIS did not show track info etc. Hence I have now re-connected as per std. You could use a switch but I reckon the error need a power off reset to clear??

On after market head units there's normally a cable to the handbreak switch. Have you tried driving with this up a notch to see if it still works? If so you can then disable this cable and still have all the other functionality.
