Could be a silly question, but are there RHD and LHD versions of sat nav units? I ask mostly as the TFT can be made to throw its light towards the driver even if it is mounted flat, and they dont have huge viewing angles at the best of times...

FAB write up btw - thanks!

No, they don't come left/right handed, but the screen does swivel through a narrow angle, left/right/up/down, so it can be tilted to either side.

It surprised me to find that the main navigation selection switches are on the right-hand side of the unit which make it slightly easier to use in a RHD car (IMO at least).

Diesel, the TFT on these units is excellent with a wide viewing angle.

Hi
I am about to embark on moving from a basic sat nav (which has never really worked for some reason) to a sat nav plus, or, as I want TCM, more likely an RNS-E. Do you know anywhere I can get hold of a copy of the info from the TVWIZ site? I see he's been leant on.

Dave - any wish to do another install on an B5 S4? Thoughts on costs?

Nige - did you get there? I have a pre-face lift 1999 T S4. Did it work ok in the end?

Cheers.

Sorry, my family commitments prevent my doing this again.

Dippy,

Great write up - only wish I had read it before getting the Navi Plus D for my 99FL. Is changing the instrument cluster the only way to get the D to talk to the DIS?

Cheers

If you have the facelift model then Navi+ "D" should work. You need a TMC/CAN gateway too.

Mine is the first of the facelifs with the analogue clock so assume the cluster does not talk CAN bus. What exactly is the TCM gateway - is it not part of the Navi unit?

Check your cluster for 3 connectors, GREEN, BLUE and GREY. If it has these 3 then it is can bus.

The TMC gateway/can Bridge is the cigarette packet sized module that converts the Bosch Can of the RNS-D to the Infotainment CAN of the cluster. It also receives the TMC channel messages from Classic FM and sends the, to the RNS-D.
