Which coolant?

Post by LHD » Mon Aug 28, 2006 8:31 pm

As the title suggest which coolant should I be using in the RS2?

Worryingly it seems to have used a little in 3-4000 K's of driving. Not loads but some for sure.

Off on holiday in it soon so if you know don't be shy and tell me, I don't trust my local Audi garage after they sold me some 15W 50 oil for it (which I believe is wrong now)

Use only Audi G12+ coolant. Can be had from stealer or GSF.

coolant

I'll second that.
Just replaced my radiator, filled up on G12 plus.
No leaks so far!
Oil I use, Quantum synta gold, fully synthetic for turbo-charged engines.
Both from main stealer.

Nothing wrong re oil. Lots of opinion around but its within spec and some prefer 'thicker' oil. Just change it every 6k/6 months with a good fully synthetic.

Re coolant pink G12 unless you have it full of blue coolant. DO NOT MIX . If you are using the older spec blue get it replaced with the newer pink coolant. If you top blue with pink you get solids forming in the coolant. Just ask my previous main dealer how painful that was for him to sort !!

If losing coolant then have a look round the engine bay for evidence i.e dried coolant. Run until hot and check all pipes. Feel under all of them as well as looking. Check radiator condition. Get it pressure tested.
However if you spot nothing and a garage spots nothing and it passes a pressure test do not give up checking all the pipes. As they age they tend to split and this can be difficult to spot as they leak under pressure with a hot engine. Coolant runs under the pipe to somewhere else and may evaporate it its adjacent to a very hot area making it a b*gger to spot.

After run pump a favourite source of leaks that passes any pressure test. Located to R of block behind radiator as you look in with 3 pipes IIRC attached. Have a careful look for coolant under it BUT if you are tighting banjo clips be careful with these as you can split the pump plastic hose joints !!!

Thanks for the advice regarding the coolant. Unfortunately my local audi garage gave me the pink stuff and said it was perfectly fine to mix it! (mines the blue stuff). Even more unfortunate I didn't see this thread until I'd done it although there is no evidence of any deposits yet, maybe as I only used a tiny bit I'll be lucky.

Starting to seriously mistrust my local garage. They fitted a new undertray and left some of the screws out as well!

LHD, I'm after a new undertray for mine.
Please can you tell me how much you paid for your tray and fittings.
Cheers.

From an Audi dealer in Nederlands-€320 fitted. Parts were €220 plus an hour of labour which they used but didn't bother fitting it correctly.

I thought it was just some U.K. dealers that were incompetent, but it seems you have them in Holland to.
Thanks for the prices LHD.
cheers.

I really would find a trusted specialist and get the coolant drained and replaced with pink only. Coolant has a finite life and pink is newer and better than blue. Which by definition must be several years old or non audi origin.
As I would advise with new ownership change all fluids and filters including the fuel filter and ignore any main stealer who says its not needed !!
