I manage to get a set at GTI International for £5 each.
The car had only done about 6,000 miles on the previous set, but felt a little sharper when they were first replaced.
Didn't throw the old ones away as they were so new, but if can get the plugs at that price again I will probably change them every year.
Probably completely unecessary though.

I've done 48K in mine since new (1995) and I've changed the spark plugs four times in 10 years. When you change them you immediately notice the difference with the engine running smoother and pulling much better. If you can't get them as cheap as Glyn suggests then I seem to recall that german and swedish stock them for not much more.

When you accelerate full throttle under load ( Uphill.) if the car has a slight splutter at top end of revs. 5-6000rpm. Time to change plugs.

I would replace them once a year - every second service. Check they are torqued correctly - they are famous for coming loose.
