This is a new one on me.

So is it worth checking the linkage from time to time and hopefully prevent this occurring unexpectedly?

It's advisable to grease up the linkage as these are known to fail but yet the older A4 shape as none of theses problems and before you ask no they don’t fit, totally different.

My car did this a few months ago and it had new linkage fitted the technician said it was rare for it to happen but thought it was due to a build up of grit and road grime.

Mine have just done the slowing down thing too. took about an hour to get the rack out, knock out the spindles (after removing the circlip) regrease and re-fit. lovely, back to a quick flick across the screen on intermittent and some high speed clearing action on the second speed. the drivers side one was fine but the passenger side was pretty much solid.

Mine became slow and my dealer had the job done under warranty as they classified it as a parts seizure. If you've got an Audi warranty - try that first.

The process of a warranty claim or the process of doing the job yourself?

takes about an hour or so depending on your mechanical skills, it's not too difficult though, you have to remove the ECU and mounting box so there's about 6 electrical plugs to undo but you can't get them wrong when refitting. remove the wiper arms then the 3 bolts that hold the rack and motor in place. once out there's a circlip on the top of each spindle that needs to come off then knock the spindles out of the rack one at a time, regrease and refit, job done

normal grease, copperslip is antiseize for components that need to be dissassembled. it's not so much a lubricant as a corrosion inhibiter

Yes its been reported in here a couple of times. While we are on the subject the rear washer can become seized to the motor arm. So when you hit the rear washer. The jet sweeps with the wiper arm. Both Brooner and myself have experienced that one within months of each other. :( So its worth having a look at that from time to time.
