Manual Carbon Clean - UPDATE - Engine's coming out
If you were to take the manifolds off and clean the carbon from the valves and intake ports, can anyone tell me which the best product and technique for doing it ?
The reason I ask is that my car is currently in Audi Swindon having this work done, and the technician asked me if I knew which products were used successfully by places like MRC or AMD, or whether I knew which products have been used by forum members who've undertaken the work themselves
Makes sense, as it saves them trying to re-invent the wheel and using an 'audi product' which possibly wouldn't be as good
Once this is done, then I'll get it back up to Doug at MRC to get the Dyno run done to see what difference it's made from it's previous slightly poor performance up there in April.

Re: Manual Carbon Clean - Products & Technique
Dear dear, doesn't give you much faith if they have to ask the customer for advice. They should know, if not they should be able to find out without having to ask you.Graeme4130 wrote:If you were to take the manifolds off and clean the carbon from the valves and intake ports, can anyone tell me which the best product and technique for doing it ?

Take it somewhere else who know what they are doing.

They should be the ones calling MRC etc! You are paying a premium to have the 'experts' do this work, are you paying yourself to run around for them? Perhaps they could pay you an hourly rate to investigate?

However, they're paying for it, not me, so any help I can give them means they'll hopefully do a decent job and not just a quick clean over
In fact, I think that they're asking me what products to use shows that they're planning on doing a thorough job which can only be a good thing, right ?
FWIW, I've left them a camera and asked them to do a few before and after shots to compare
I met and spoke with the technician, and he seems a good chap, so confidence is high
I guess only a return to MRC rolling road to compare against the pre-clean measurement will tell

Re: Manual Carbon Clean - Products & Technique
I posted up on here and over at Piatonheads, but either no-one wants to tell me or no-one other than the specialists actually know
Once it's done, I'll get back up to see Doug at MRC and get the dyno run done to see how much improvement there's been.
This should be a fair indication of how good a job Audi have done
It's not been easy to get them to take it on, that's for sure

Re: Manual Carbon Clean - Products & Technique
I would tell you what Revolution use but TBH my goldfish brain has forgotten but it is something like standard carb cleaner, a specially made vacuum nozzle and a Dremmel; PM Glenn and little Glen will be able to tell you by reply.

Sorry not to directly answer your question, but I'll post up some details once it's all been done and we know it's workedPaulRS4 wrote:I asked the same question here with no reply..........Pie wrote:Just out of curiousity, how did you manage to blag that freebie out of them?

Re: Manual Carbon Clean - Products & Technique
I started a thread on AR about this a while back. Some of the guys had some interesting ideas. Anything from gasoline to oven spray to sea foam to gun carbon cleaner has been used...and agitated with zip ties on a drill, wire brushes, picks etc. I'm a little surprised the OP's Shop's computer doesn't have google?

It does appear that basic elbow grease is the main ingredientsakimano wrote:I started a thread on AR about this a while back. Some of the guys had some interesting ideas. Anyway, they've had it a few days now and I'm away in Lanzarote for the weekend, so I'll guess I'll just have to wait and see how it is on my return
I left them with a decent camera and the tech said he was ok doing before and after shots, so at east I should get a decent Idea of the work quality
In the meantime, seeing as I'm missing the car already, here's a pic

Re: Manual Carbon Clean - Products & Technique
awesome car
the Euro black RS4s look so good with the bright silver trim and wheels and the clear corner headlights (ours have awful orange reflectors in the corner)

Re: Manual Carbon Clean - Products & Technique
It's nothing new - any decent carb cleaner will loosen it but as above... elbow grease is the main ingredient.
