Help! Headlight Adjustment

Post by Maximo » Tue Jan 17, 2012 11:25 am

The little white adjustment cog on my drivers side headlight has gone missing. Found this as I went to adjust the light, it just seemed to be a little more dipped then before and getting a little worse as the weeks go by. Just phoned Audi, in the hope they'd have a simple small adjustment cog. How wrong was I, that'll be a new headlight sir @ £622 + VAT. No thanks.

Can anyone help? I've started to have a look on ebay for an old unit that I can butcher in the mean time.

Cheers

Garry

You can definitely find just the cog. I found one recently on a passat forum.

im looking for one too, they adjusted it with a wrench when going into mot...so i hope a new one will fit cos they used some force to get it turning...
i think the automatic adjustment wont work either when this is missing...

It doesn't affect the electrical leveling.

Some info here:

Apparently B5 Passat owners were getting them from Euro Car Parts for £1.10 but I can't find them on the ECP site. Might be worth a phone call.

The adjustment is separate to the auto levelling:

I've PM'd Grizz and also e-mailed a8parts.co.uk in the hope they have something. I'll also go speak to Eurocarparts over the weekend. Maybe worth getting a batch of them just in case it's a little more common.

Tried EuroCarParts and they only do the headlight, same withe GSF. A8parts.co.uk don't have naything either. Seems that they are like rocking hourse <beep>. Ebay seems to be the answer, I shall be looking for any old headlight that's got them on.

Yup, had a look and seems like hard work to me. I have IT hands :) I do like the sound of the locking nuts option though and will have a look at the weekend for something suitable along with the tubing approach. Welding isn't my thing so will try and avoid that one for now. It's just a shame that you can 't buy the cog's from anywhere. If I do find someone that does sell them I'll be getting a batch of them.

There are a few headlights on ebay but not really cheap enough to write on off just for a little white cog that I may or may not be usable.

No welding involved. JBWeld is the name of a strong glue.

Had the car up to my local mechanics yesterday, he had a go at moving the adjuster but said that he thinks it's not connected to the refelector. Time to get the headlight out and have a good look at it. I've tried before but can't seem to release it, so any advice on how I can remove it with the bumper in place.

It seemed pretty obvious to me. Perhaps you are missing the screw right at the bottom of the headlight that you have to use an extra long extension to reach.

Got that one out but the unit just doesn't want to come out. I've twisted it back into the wing but that doesn't seem to help. It's like there is something blocking the unit from coming forward, like there's something sticking out.
