engine knock

Driving my 2006 RS4 with 72000 on it today and started to hear a noise coming from it while reving it up, it drove on for a couple of miles further then it got worse. it seemed to be fine on idle but as soon as you took it off idle it started rattling, switched it off and got it home on a trailer and then investicated further, by this time it was rattling even on idle, the noise seems to be from the left bank head. wondering if its the timing chain tentioner thats gone, took off rocker cover and everything seems fine.

Any ideas ?

When I've had a cam chain tensioner fail on another different car it made the car sounded like a diesel.

I'm sure someone else has had some chain/tensioner issues ... Maybe a search will reveal more
