Tappets Rattling

Post by paulyd65 » Mon Jul 18, 2011 12:29 pm

Hi All,

I have a 03 plate B6 with just over 92K on the clock. It is serviced regularly and has run perfectly (apart from a knackred starter mortor and a duff coil pack).

I have noticed recently that the engine is starting to sound a pit rattly at the top end i.e tappets, etc. Used to bit quite as a mouse before but now its getting to sound like a diesel and I don't want that.

Any ideas at what I need to do or it is just a consequence of a engine with high mileage.

Cheers all.

Sounds like bad oil? What are you using?

I recommend Fuchs Titan Pro S 5w40. It's great stuff!!

Check it's not coming from right at the back of the engine from the timing chains

Hi Xyber

Definitely not the timing chains. Interesting about the oil though. I have always used Mobil 1 5w/30 very time it has been serviced and for top ups and as recommended by Audi.

Do you think I should try your solution in changing the oil? Did you have the same problem?

Cheers for your help

I tried the Fuchs oil to try and quieten down the start up rattle, but it made the entire engine smoother and quieter.

I used Castrol Edge 5w30 before that, but wouldnt go back now. Opie Oils is normally the cheapest place to get it.

Hi Xyber

Cheers for that. Sounds like a plan so will get some ordered for the next service.

Thanks for your advice. Much appreciated.

All the best

Hi,

It could be a noisey injector, but that would be a loud ticking noise. You'd be able to isolate the noise by putting a bar to your ear and resting the other end on the injector and/or engine block in different places.
I would, also, remove the oil dip stick and check that the oil hasn't thinned out with petrol or emulsified with water.

Do you know for sure what oil went in at the last service? It could have been rubbish.
Changing the oil may be the cheepest option to see, but I wouldn't leave it too long before it gets worse.

Might be worth sticking VCDS ( vag-com) on it to see if there are any problems reported.
I take it that the engine light isn't on?

Regards, Chris.
