Full lock steering noise

Post by kidyamlo » Thu Mar 03, 2011 7:21 pm

Deep, bass-like creaking / rubbing noise accompanied by steering wheel vibration at full lock (low speed, obviously, not pulling donuts or anything). Any ideas? Steering column on way out? Just to preempt, it is not the sound of tyres on arches.

Could be a CV joint.

I have had this full lock noise a couple of times on other cars and it turned out to be the joint on its last legs.

Could just be tyre scrub not with the arches but between the tyre and tarmac. Low speeds turns on full lock give off this noise. Check your steering fluid level.

I get this noise too in the same circumstances and have always put it down to tyre scrub.

Car handles fine in all other respects and no known problem with steering at any other times.
