European road trip advice/suggestions

Post by Macdaddy » Sun Feb 13, 2011 10:56 am

I'm in the process of planning our European road trip for August this year and after anyones advice or suggestions and things to see or do.

My plans to:

Start at Brugge then possibly Amsterdam,

On to Luxemburg, down through Switzerland

Milan/Genoa in Italy

across the coast to Monaco/ Nice

Back up through France and the Champagne region finishing at Paris.

Any thoughts?

well done ... I am also doing a mahoooosive trip ... I've already got the eurotunnel and greek ferries booked

London -- > Reims -- > Dijon -- > Nice/Monaco -- > Rimini -- > Bari -- > Patra -- > Athens -- > Kos

Kos -- > Athens -- > Patra -- > Bari -- > Modena -- > Strasbourg -- > London

in 2009 I did a road trip to Munich, via Amsterdam and Frankfurt

they are fecking awesome

on the way back we stopped for lunch in Luxumbourg and discovered that petrol is half the price there, so defo plan to fill up there !!

any your missing a trick by not hitting any Autobahns ... I hit 170 with 4 people in the car racing a German S5 !!

Can thoroughly recommend the Gotthard Pass route, missing out the boring tunnel. You get stunning views on the way up and lovely downhill slope all the way to Milan on the way down the other side. Don't forget the Bugatti museum at Mulhouse if you're passing that way.

There's also a lovely town just before the tunnel, right next to a lake, where we got a 70's throwback hotel with a room overlooking the lake (like look out over the balcony and there was nothing between you and water but a 50 foot drop!) which was nice to chill out. Can't remember the names off the top of my head, but can find them if of interest.

This:

is what you call a road trip. Just completed it in a W124 Mercedes. Car gets auctioned for charity and fly back. Highly recommend it.

But infinitely more fun - I do the London -- > Reims -- > Dijon -- > Nice/Monaco part every year and the journey is one of the highlights...

Couple of pics to wet your appetite!

We did our trip in September and took in the Monza F1 round - bloody awesome, but the Italians are absolute psycho drivers! We also had a very near miss on the Autostrada West of Milan when bowling along at 150km/h and came across what looked like an aluminium drain cover lying in the road! Hit it with front wheel, it flicked it up under car and shattered under rear wheel - went through sidewall of the tyre but luckily didn't burst otherwise we'd have been scraping ourselves off the concrete barrier about 5 foot to our left!

Was a special trip as the Mrs found out she was expecting junior :D
