What is DRC??

Post by crown62 » Tue Jul 27, 2010 10:09 pm

Sorry if this seems a thick question.

Had my Black avant a week now 07 with 15000 miles.

Noticed in a few threads a mention of DRC? what is DRC? one quote I spotted said.....(Check DRC has been done (but warranted by Audi in any event till 2011)

So what is DRC and am I covered till 2011, if its not been done is it done for free by Audi? :D

Dynamic Ride Control

(extract uplifted from above URL)

B7 suspension and steering
" The B7 RS4 also incorporates Audi's "Dynamic Ride Control" (DRC)[5] "Sports Suspension"[5] mechanism. The dampers (shock absorbers) are made for Audi by KW, and central reservoirs/valves made by KYB (Kayaba). In the RS4 suspension, a fluid hydraulic linkage between diagonally opposing front and rear suspension dampers (left front to right rear, and vice-versa) is used to counteract vehicle pitch and roll.[5] Lightweight magnesium/aluminium alloy multi-link suspension arms (four arm with virtual steering axis up front,[4] and trapezoidal arm with unequal length track control arms at the rear)[4][5] locate each hub/brake/roadwheel assembly in a controllable fashion, whilst minimising unsprung masses. Lightweight hollow tubular anti-roll bars are standard front and rear.[4] Compared to standard B7 A4 models, the RS4 features a 30 millimetres (1.2 in) lower ride height.[5] An optional "Sports Suspension Plus"[5] lowers the car by a further 10 millimetres (0.4 in), and marginally further stiffens the damper rates.

Axle track has also been increased over standard A4s; the front widened by 37 millimetres (1.5 in),[5] to 1,559 millimetres (61.4 in)[4] and the rear by 47 millimetres (1.9 in)[5] to 1,569 millimetres (61.8 in).[4] "

Speed sensitive "servotronic"[5] variable-assistance electro-hydraulic power assisted steering (PAS) is controlled from a compact flat-bottomed steering wheel, finished in perforated leather with mock-aluminium trim. The steering rack ratio is 13.1:1,[4] and the turning circle is 11.1 metres (36.42 ft).[4]

Thanks for that, that is quite comprehensive.
I have SS+ suspension.
Is there an issue with it? How do you spot there is a problem with it? other than the handling goes to pot!
Is there some sort of cover by Audi until 2011 on all cars?

Vague feel in the steering and clunks. By then it's knackered though. Worth putting on a ramp and checking for leaks from the damper units.

Audi have given a 'goodwill' warranty on DRC until the car is either 5 yrs old or has done 75k miles. Some say that the car has to be serviced exclusively by Audi during this 5 yr period for this warranty to apply but some on here have had the warranty honoured even though a service or two has been carried out by non-Audi garages.

Audi have acknowledged the DRC problem, that's good.

There are so many threads on this subject, here's a recent one that highlights the action by Audi America.
