Hi and Help with SD Cards!

Post by Ve8 » Tue Nov 03, 2009 10:47 pm

First off hi to everyone here, just bought a b6 S4 Moro Blue and so far very pleased (apart from the 14mpg around town!)
Im trying to sort out the SD card and can only seem to copy over the tracks but not keep them in "albums" as you would in any mp3 player. Is there a piece of software that anyone recomends?? Ive worked out how to create Mp3's from my ITunes library but dont really want 1000's of single tracks to navigate through- there must be a simple way to do this!!! - Please say there is!!!

I want to end up with e.g.

Album name
>Track 1
>Track 2

Check out this thread from the B7 RS4 sub-forum

http://rs246.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB ... ht=sd+card

Alternatively use the search function for SD card or RNS-E, should find some relevant threads for you.

Hope this helps..

The SD card reader in the car will recognise directory structures.

I set the card up with (say) 30 directories, each named after an artist.

Each artist directory has a sub-dir which is the name of that artist's album(s).

Each album sub-dir contains the songs on the album.

Tricks:
(a) to get the songs to play in their album order, I had to prefix each song title with a number (01, 02, etc, as otherwise it will read 10, 11, 12, 1 etc on a 12 track album).
(b) the card reader will only recognise 512 items. Each directory and each file counts as an item.
(c) the card reader won't read cards > 4Gb, or SD HC cards (guessing you know that). I usually run to 512 items in just over 2Gb.

It's a faff to set up, but once the songs are set up on your pc, it's seconds to copy what you want onto the cards.

Greg - did you just create the directory structures in MS windows? or do you have to use additional software to create the album folders??

As far as I recall, I did it in Windows.

I used a cheap piece of software called All Music Converter to rip my iTunes library to mp3, though, and I think that preserved the directory structure in iTunes. I recall having a b@stard job sorting out track running orders for the kids' multidisk story books. I ended up (I think) with 1-01 Track 1 (1), 1-01 Track 2 (2) etc for disk 1, to n-01 Track 1 (1) for disk n.

Audio storybooks really don't work so well if the tracks aren't in the right order...

Another tip is to create playlists. Drag and drop these as opposed to all the song files.

I rip my mp3's using a freeware program called CDex http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/?q=download. it will automatically title the albums and tracks etc and it saves them as you would like for the in car - i.e. a folder for the artist with a sub-folder for each album and then all the tracks within those album folders.
I then just copy and paste what i want onto my sd cards. in the car they automatically come up in artist order with the albums as subfolders when you press the select knob.
hope this helps.
