ipod dock in ashtray? But how to make it?

Post by Russboy » Fri Jan 16, 2009 4:17 pm

Ok i've got a Pioneer AVIC x1R headunit that with a little add on I can use my ipod in the car.

Currently ipod is situated here:

Now as I dont smoke and dont allow smoking in my car I was thinking it might look better with a docking station in the ashtray, bit more neat and tody then. Effectively it would sit in here:

I have a small docking station that will fit inside the ashtray but thinking I meed to fill the ashtray with "something" then fit the docking station into that to make it look more tidy and keep it upright. Any ideas what I should use in there? It kind of needs something I can mold a little before it goes off to allow me to mount the docking unit in it. Doesnt have to look pretty as such as going to cover the whole thing in a black cloth. Suggestions?

Epoxy putty like Milliput maybe? Then get a cheapy dock station off ebay to give you the nicely moulded bit to sit the ipod in (for instance - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/USB-Video-Charger ... tsupported)
Cunning plan me thinks and should be fairly straightforward and give you a nice finish.

I personally have mine Ipod out of sight, there is no real need to see the screen in any shape or form as the headunit does it all (ipod just displays the Alpine logo on it anyway)

Doh sorry just read your post properly again and realised you already have the dock bit - the rest should still stand though

Thats the look im after, I found that the docking station used on your norm ipod for connection to your pc etc doesnt communicate in the same was to the head unit, so presuming the pioneer ipod connection wire is different in some way.

They make them for the A4, too. Not sure what the connections are. I find them a bit pricey.

I made an "AUX" input on the RNS-D which works very nicely from the headphone socket of the iPhone (if a bit quiet). I bought a Kensington LiquidAUX to get the sounds directly from the dock, but I can't use it because of the alternator noise that's generated. By the way, if you ever want a laugh, phone Kensington Technical Support.

Anyway, my point being, beware of noisy power supply if you(re going to make your own dock (or even if you buy an expensive thing like Kensignton which I'm now probably going to bin).

I tend to agree with bobbler. Those resin kits are really good. I've used them before - messy but fun.

Also you can get some really professional results. Depends how good you are with your hands.

You could do some interesting lighting effects with the clear stuff, if yo'uve got the time and imagination!
