PI$$ED:-Creaky Front Left Corner

Post by Trig » Mon Nov 03, 2008 10:51 pm

Had a creak/squeak on the O/S front orner now for a month!
It does it when you turn and/or when you bounce on the wing.
Thought I had sorted it but came back after 2 days.
Removed the 2 top arms and the track rod and everything seems fine here.
When you jack it up to remove the wheel and have a look, it goes away.
The only thing I can think it is, is the spring on the strut.
Do thre front springs break???

Anyone else had this?

I need help before the thing drives me insane

Check the Xenon auto levelling sensor under the wheel arch

any spring can break, but creaking is often a sign of worn rubber bushes in the control arms.

Not as far as i know, think they are just 'dry' rubber push in bushes.

Get yourself a mechanics stethascope. These are really good at pinpointing creaks and knocks etc. Basically it just does the same thing as a long screwdriver placed in contact with your ear and the source of the noise.

Highly recommended.

Right,
Had a bloody good look round it this afternoon and found that BOTH bottom ball joints have play in them and it is that that creaks when you turn the wheel or the sus. goes up and down.
Pulled back the rubber boots and 'lubed' them up and no more noise, but these will need replacement.

My questions are

Does anyone know the part no's of the 2 lower arms?
Are these the same as A4 items?
Where is best to buy from?

i fitted new arms to the front of mine when i baught it.

I used a Meyle kit for an A4 i baught from german ebay. Cost about £260-270 incl delivery:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0292061797

They are upgraded over the stock audi parts, with larger balljoints and seem to get a good writeup, plus they're a lot cheaper than the OE ones, and it really tightened up the suspension changing them all.

The S4 and A4 parts have different part numbers on vagcat, but the difference is a slight change in the rubber bushes, and from what i saw when fitting them, the Meyle bushes look more sturdy than the OE S4 ones that came off so i wouldnt worry too much about the difference.
