Pressure Tester - Would anyone be interested?

Post by Bluebrakes » Wed Aug 27, 2008 5:15 pm

Hi Everybody,

Ok i'll try not to sound like a salesman. ;-)

It seems that this could be something that people who own turboed cars including S4 would be interested in. Especially to do home diagnostics.

There have been a few pages on the net regarding how to make your own pressure tester, which from experience can cost a fair bit of money to make... and time. So I've spoken to a couple of companies that might be interested in helping to make it. Both very keen to give it a go providing I can cover cost of tooling etc.

I know this idea isn't going to create millions, but if I can provide a already built and tested piece of kit to test your car for a reasonable price then people might buy it.

My little prototype is made from machined aluminium and silicon hose. I've been told they can reduce this price drastically by using other high quality methods.

It uses a normal car type one way tyre valve on the intake end cap. This alloys you to pressurise the system with a tyre pump.

The kit would check for leaks from:
  • Intake system
    Throttle body boot
    Intercoolers
    Splits in hoses
Some of the valves (such as the green one way valves)
    and so on... ;-)
You could check the system to see if its holding adequate pressure or to listen for leaks through the system.

Initially, I would expect the kit to cost around £39.99 inc VAT. based on what they tell me. I would expect this price to drop if I can get a good number of orders.

Anybody interested in buying one? (Or even like the idea?)

I bought mine off a guy from eBay who sells quite a few. I know a number of other people from here have bought them from the same guy.

Think it was under £40 delivered for a similar looking item which includes a small pressure gauge as well. Just done a search on eBay and found that he is still selling these, although the price has gone up £1 since I bought mine! - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0264058021

Perhaps look at getting a price for units using those 'other high quality methods'.
The aluminium looks nice, but not really neccessary for such an application. If you could make them better, cheaper and more available (that other guy on eBay only seems to sell them now and again), i'm sure you'll be onto a winner.

Thanks blue thunder.

Although i have looked on e-bay before, he must only sell a few at a time as I haven't seen them. Thanks for the tip off. ;-)

I went for aluminium for my own version because I've got a machine shop at home. So making it at home was easy but very time consuming and certainly not a way to mass produce them. Especially being left with a bin liner full of aluminium shavings from making the end cap. lol.

Actually the pressure gauge was something one of the companies suggested as a the next model up if you will.

I think e-bay would be the way to go initially. Offering RS246 guys a discount. ;-)
