rs6 power loss, gearbox problem?????
rs6 power loss, gearbox problem?????
Could anyone out there tell me if the power loss i am experiencing could be a gearbox problem??? What happens when these rs6 gearboxes start to go wrong?? My car seems to having the same "clutch slipping" as you get in manual cars as it seems to have got worse today and now looks to be pointing towards this but im no expert. Do they suffer with gearbox failiure?? it seems to be changing down early and letting the engine rev higher when driving in town etc then when it comes on boost seems to slip and the engine revs but doesnt pull, anyone have any experience of this?? thanks in advance, steve
RE: rs6 power loss, gearbox problem?????
Mine has been slipping in 3rd, 4th and 5th when below 2500rpm. It acts like a worn out clutch in a manual tranny. Every time I lift off the accelerator and then get back on it, the engine revs up a few hundred rpms and then slips into engagement. What is the mechanism that is responsible for this behavior? I have pointed it out to the regional rep who says they all do it and its normal wear. I cant believe this expensive car is supposed to do this, especially since it didnt do it for the first 3 years ..

This slippage (I call it Sliptronic) is just like what a manual tranny sounds like when the clutch is worn out, except it dosent happen when you first shift into a gear.. rather, if you are in say 4th or 5th gear on the hiway at say 70mph and have to lift off the throttle to coast for a second or two, when you reapply power, instead of the car instantly moving forward, the engine increases its rpm but the tranny dosent follow for a few seconds. Instead, its as if the clutch is slowly being let out and a gradual engagement occurs resulting in an increase then gradual decrease in RPM with no forward thrust until it locks up again.. The vag says the TC is locked but my ears tell me something is slipping.. it will do this every time you let off the accelerator then reapply throttle.. It didnt do this until about a year ago.. It will exibit this symptom in 3rd, 4th and 5th especially if the rpm is below say 2300 or so. Its like there was a layer of grease on the clutchplate that slips when you accelerate until it has enuff power to lockup. No codes or CEL/MIL

Well, it acts like a slipping clutch.. Question is, how much of this is permitted and whats the fix? Is the simple fact that its doing this enough to demand it be repaired under warranty?
I understand there is a chip inside the ZF box itself that regulates this stuff so it cant be addressed via TCM. Does yours do this?

When the gearbox went on mine, it had a valve sticking on the valve body IIRC (and a TCU error logged). This was followed shortly with internal clutch burnout. FYI the sticking valve did not trigger a CEL/MIL or safe mode on the gearbox. When the clutch went it was a very bad case of clutch slip, in the end you couldn't drive at all and it had to be winched onto the truck. All this happend in the space of 2 days after picking my car up (from 1st slip to box death). When they replace the box they should inspect the torque converter and replace as required (kinda obvious really!).
Sorry, I am not trying to scare anyone, that was just my experience.
I occasionally get a very light thump (in drive) when approaching a junction and slowing down, I change my mind and accellerate just as it goes to downshift and then she will change back to 2nd. Only time it ever happens, and this is exactly the same behaviour as the Auto in the 2.7T A6 I had. It doesn't happen in Sport mode.

mine has the odd thump but so does the allroad and the circumstances are similar to those above - nothing to worry about.
i'm thinking that the slipping clutch is actually a solenoid not doing it's job correctly. i can dig up a table of the solenoid logic for the 5-speed which could be useful to check against the solenoids activities logged by vag-com when you detect clutch slip.
where i am going with this is that solenoid is not too difficult to replace, if you know which one to replace...
man, the above must make me a gear-head....

Box Features
Mine is identical to yours Steve. When I very first drive it cold is changes into 2nd and revs rise to 3k with not alot of go. It then does a few weird changes and occasionally thumps.
I don't know if it's a failure or just a feature !
