R8 First Drive

Post by jonp » Sun Sep 23, 2007 2:44 pm

For those that haven't already driven an R8, I just thought you might like to hear my first impressions... especially as an RS4 B7 owner with 63,000 miles in 18 months.

First impression as you sit in it is obviously its build quality, and of course the lack of visibility compared with the RS4.

This vehicle had the DSG box with flappy paddles - not my first choice, but something I could get used to, especially as it is a true manual box.

Its feels a very small amount quicker than the RS, (which on paper it is) and also you notice that the pitching is off course more choppy because of the shorter wheelbase and weight.

Like the RS, it's glued to the road, and showed no signs of brake fade, even with a quick stop down from 140mph on an A-road. In the corners it is a joy to ride, and certainly exibhits non of the inital slight understeer qualities of the current B7. It's very nimble, and like the RS, the exhaust note when in 'sport' mode is beautiful - it may be a little louder.

Milton Keynes roundabouts are such fun!

I am used to people who know what an RS4 is coming up to talk to me about it in petrol stations and when parking, but the R8 get serious interest from almost everyone. You really do notice everyone looking at you. Not so bad, unless they are PC Plod!

I guess this will be a real points catcher - as it just looks so stunning sitting still.

Interestingly, I have also been looking to replace my RS, so have also driven the AM V8, the New M3, the M5, and the Porsche 911 Carrera 4S. The R8 is afar better car than all of them in my opinion.

So the first hour in the RS was pretty amazing - I suggest you take one for a drive, then start saving !!!
