Scavenger pump

Post by nrf » Fri Jun 01, 2007 11:18 am

Hi there - anyone heard of an RS6 having to have a scavenger pump replaced to fix a "long term" engine management light issue?

Anyone shed any light on what it does too - I believe it is something to do with oil circulation....

Thanks

Lol, I didn't even know the RS6 had a scavenger pump.

Yep, it's for oil circulation (see R8 design notes!). When you use a shallow oil pan in an engine (commonly called dry sump) you have a separate tank where the oil is stored. This ensures that the engine is supplied with oil at all times, ensuring a constant uniform oil supply. This type of setup usually has 2 pumps. 1 to draw from the tank and deliver the oil, and 1 to scavenge it (return it to the tank from the dry sump).

Advantages of dry sump include lower engine mounting (for race cars), not run off the crank driven belts etc.

AFAIK the RS6 does NOT have a dry sump and hence does NOT have a scavenger pump; it has a wet sump with a typical oil pump.

PLEASE correct me if I am wrong. :)

Actually I'm sure it is a wet sump system in the RS6. The new RS4 shares the same V8 engine as the R8 but the R8 has dry sump, RS4 is wet. (This also enables the R8 to have a smaller lighter flywheel). FWIW.

I'd say the guy at Audi just made a mistake, IMHO.

Many thanks for increasing my knowledge on this issue!

Interesting - wonder what they will be doing to my car for the 2/3 days they "need it" to repalce this pump.... if it doesn't have one!! LOL

If anyone else knows anything about whether the RS6 has a scavenger pump I'd love to hear from you!
