Cup tyres

Post by Mikeyboy » Tue May 01, 2007 12:29 pm

Chris Harris mentioned Cup tyres (semi slicks) for the RS4 the other day. Anyone know what brand and where you can get them from?

Mich cups are very good,,,despite owning a measly S4, I also run a Porsche on track when I can,,,the general concensus is that a Toyo 888 will do 90% of what a cup will do for 50% of the price. they also seem to wear well on a Gt3 which is a reasonably heavier car than most track going pork.....hence shouldn't be too bad for wear on an RS4.

do they do them in the required 19" or do you track on 18" wheels and tyres?
Never argue with an idiot, they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Have just looked at this site and unless I am mistaken there are no tyres (tires) listed as Extra Load 97Y, which means that they are not suitable?

We track on 18"s, but I know they make 19"s.....
I am not in the tyre game, but if you call someone like Steve at www.simplytyres.co.uk he will know if the correct sizes for RS4 are available......he fitted a set of cups to a mates car last week, so I know he can get cups & 888.

Looked on the Michelin site and they don't admit to doing a 19 but then suppliers seem to know better than the manufacturers admit most of the time.

To do 18s means whole wheel and tyre changes which is logical but even more expensive.

Turning this thing into a half decent track day special is goign to cost about the same as an Atom!

Why would you want to track an RS4?
I am a huge fan of the car and may well own one at some point, but they are a fantastic road car, I really cannot see the point of tracking one, the whole experiencewould be so un rewarding and surely a decent 160-200bhp caterham or 300bhp 911RS would run rings round it and be more fun.

Why not track an RS4 ? or anything else for that matter ?

Why should tracking a big comfortable (heavy) car be un-rewarding ?

I see what you're saying about track focused cars, but TBH lots of people like to explore them on track and prefer this approach to 'enduring' a track focused car every day, or having the costs associated with owning both.

All just my opinion of course :)

I wasn't trying to be too confrontational, I really respect the B7 RS4, probably the best real world car available right now.
All I was trying to say was that it would cost too much to convert it into a decent track car, every car is a compromise between road & track. By making it more "trackable" it would take some of the shine off of the car.

It just seems to me an RS4 would be incredible to drive in Germany on decent un restricted roads and even at the flowing Nordschliefe, but stiffening it up with noisy snatchy brakes, so it would perform at Brands or Donnington would ruin the concept for me.....only an opinion and we all own our cars for different reasons....when I get a B7 it will be my road car ;)

Yes there is a lot of skill involved in driving a 4wd car with ESP ;)

I will let you know how an RS4 compares if I see one on track over the next few months, I know which car I would sooner to be driving to and from the circuit in though and it wasn't made at Weissach :)

I know you were not being confrontational mate, but it is horses for courses.

Useability vs driver involement and input is a key difference.

The B7 RS4 is quick though, to be fair.
