Replacing tyres

Post by Evo-Mark » Tue Jan 23, 2007 5:31 pm

What is the general consensus on replacing tyres on the S3 with regards to the following situation:

I have 3 tyres all with 5-6mm tread left on them and one alloy with no tyre. Tyre was punctured and unrepairable :(

Should I replace just the one tyre with new one (exactly the same type as the other 3) or should I replace two of the tyres.

Reason for my thinking is, shouldn't the tryes across the same axel of a 4WD car be of the same age/wear. Or will the fact that the other tyres have 5-6mm of tread make no difference if I just fit one new tyre. :?:

You advice appreciated.

Tough one, i've only replaced them in pairs previously! Suppose you could replace two and keep your part worn as a spare incase the same happens again....

I'd just put a new one on the n/s front.

What does the book say ?

I thought you were supposed to have the better tyres/matched ones on the front, therefore put the new/old one on the rear ....

Dave

PS How much tread is there on a new one, is it about 8mm?

i had the same scenario on my S4, N/S rear tyre found to have a manufacturing defect so put 2 new ones on the rear and the O/S rear tyre went as spare. tread depths were 5.0mm all round, new one was 8.0mm.

Thanks for the reponses and advice. I've decided to replace with two new tyres and get these fitted to the front.

Can't wait to get my 18" RS4's back on the S3 8) Currently running with my spare set of 17" original Avus rims and I just don't like the look of them (no offense, just my personal taste).

regards

Evo-Mark.
