Audi S3 stereo and cosole lights remain on

Has anyone seen this problem before?

I opened my S3 this morning to find the stereo system and the surronding console lights were switched on.

The stereo does not display anything just a red light covering the entire screen. The rest of the console is also light up.

I am unable to turn on / off the tuner, insert a CD / Tape although the air con still appears to work ok.

This problem persists with or without the keys in the ignition and the car being locked or unlocked.

Any ideas?

sounds familiar - mine did this once (symphony II). Pulling the stereo fuse, waiting a minute or so and replacing it did the trick - never saw it again. If you pull the panel on the right side of the dash by the steering wheel, the fuses are numbered on that panel, so you will know which is the right fuse to pull.
