Tesco 99 RON

Post by Dippy » Wed Jan 11, 2006 2:01 pm

I'm nearly at the end of my first ever tank of this stuff. Based on my buttometer (not the most reliable of measuring instruments, but it's all I have) I'd say it's good, certainly better than Optimax.

Not sure I'll bother getting more due to the location (anyone who knows Reading might agree), plus the fact that with my daily journey to work being 10mph average I don't think it matters what bloody fuel I use!

I have to say, I haven't really noticed that much of a difference between optimax and the 99-Ron form Tesco (ran about 6 tanks of the stuff to give it a chance). The only think I've really noticed is that my average MPG on the DIS has gone down b between 1 and 1.5

Indeed - even when Optimax wasn't available in the week before Christmas, I didn't entertain the thought of going down to Tesco!

Peter,

In the week before Christmas I was running on fumes when I struggled through the traffic to ToysRUs. So in that case I was more than glad to get round the corner to Tescos!

Anyone use Sainsbury's Super unleaded? Thoughts on how good it is?

I haven't used it in a long time, but I'm fairly certain it's only 97 RON

Anothing thing to bear in mind is that Tesco's 99 RON is about 5% ethanol. This increases the
knock resistance but lowers the calorific value. The best thing is to add toluene but it's not really
very practical. btw, I am using 99 RON at the moment as I find Optimax to be snakeoil.

IIRC toluene is a very unpleasant substance that you do not want on your skin - any chemists out there who can comment.
Many years ago I used acetone as an additive, after reading an American mag, and as it was something I had available via the place I worked.......... not sure it was of any use :!:

I switched to Tescos several months ago -- one mile away as opposed to three for Optimax, seems fine but no real figures

i'm not a chemist but i carry out the COSHH assessments for our department. we've banned the use of many products that contain toluene because of the risks to health although it's in many every day products. IIRC it's included in degreasers like Gunk which is used daily. to put it in perspective we do tend to errr on the side of caution with these things as it's easier to not use something than pay out a claim for damaging someones health. it's all down to the quantities used and the frequency of contact. there should be a Material Safety Data Sheet available somewhere on the net listing the chemical make up and risks associated with Tescos 99 ron.
