should I sell my car

Post by ianw » Wed Dec 17, 2003 12:35 pm

I am posting this here because I know I will get totally biased replies

history
okay I have had my car since new (mar 2001), a misano totally standard with about 18,000 kms. I have moved house so nowadays it sits under a cover as its quicker to use the bus to get to work. (yes I know its a waste)

problem
I want to buy a new camera lens been wanting one for years - a very expensive one (if you think a grand is expensive then you are just thinking too cheaply :-) ), so jokingly suggested i sell my other halfs car to buy one. She said that's fine if she had mine to use, which got me thinking. (please note I have to justify this lens over getting some work on the house roof done - no way I could get car performance upgrades passed with the amount I use it.

resevations

I don't mind her driving it, but I know she won't take as much care as me as to how and where she drives or parks, so I know it will get scratched and minor bumps or knocked in the car park etc.

solutions

1. we keep both cars and mine gets used like now about 6 weekends a year and I just take the flack for buying the lens for the rest of my life.

2. we sell her car and she uses mine and I get to keep it and wash it at weekends, her argument being that it should be used. (may be easier to get her to agree to mods though)

3. we sell both and buy something that I care less about eg a freelander or base level quattro

I should just add that we really only need one car - as I still have a motorbike or two for my use

suggestions or comments please

Solution:

step1: get up from in from your computer... go ahead... well, you might want to
step2: print out the next steps before you go
step3: NOW get up from your computer
step4: wear some shoes
step5: go out and remove the cover from your car
step6: take 4-5 steps back and just look at it
step7:now walk around it, looking
step8: get in, take a deep breath, start the ignition
step9: drive to Arosa and back (will take you some 4 hours roughly. but that includes some 2x20 miles of mountain road wih some 345 bends up and 345 bends down again. As well as 2 hourse of motorway cruising.
step10: take your decision. You will know what to do!

Hmmm thanks for reminding me of that, did arosa in the summer was great apart from being stuck behind a scooby estate for the last part but at least he was trying even if the car wasn't capable

step 4 is probably a swiss thing lost on the UK readers

okay that was easy thats the third option ruled out, just gotta decide on option 1 or 2 now

Ahh...look on the bright side, at least you've got the decision to make!

Is there nothing else you can sell....raise some funds that way rather than getting rid of the motor?

okay that was easy thats the third option ruled out, just gotta decide on option 1 or 2 now

option4: go buy the lens anyway and hide it from the wife
option5: go buy the lens anyway and show it to the wife

I'm not a good example of restraint and level-headed thinking, so would just buy the lens. Life is too short to worry about such minor things. If once you've brought it you are skint, or your missus is really upset then make the choice.

My wife drives our RS4 sometimes. I've persuaded her now though to always park out of the way from most cars. She is generally careful, but mistakes do happen. They can be fixed (doesn't stop me from getting annoyed though, just as I would do if I damaged it)

Cheers,
John.

Buy the lens, let the wife drive the RS4. Something sexy seeing a pretty face behind the wheel.
Standard RS4 (is it the only standard one left?)

Hmmm reminds me of my uncle who used to buy things and then put them in the loft until they got a bit dusty and then say to his wife as he brushed the dust off that he has had it for ages

I don't have to sell the car to buy the lens, but it got me thinking as to if we really need two cars, especially as mine has been under a cover for six weeks (must charge the battery).

I am tending towards the sell her car and let her use the rs4 and as john said get the bumps fixed as and when they occur. Fortunately her car is to small and no 4wd so no good for skiing

John I think you are a collector like me but I am trying unsuccessfully to cure myself. Ah well at least I can tell her I asked for unbiased advice and I was advised I had to keep the car

Plan B.
Divorce the wife and loose 1/2 your money.
She keeps the house, you keep the car, mod it, buy your lens and get a mistress.

PS Stop being so damm sensible and taking the bus. People who own RS4's are Not allowed to take the bus, its illegal. You must drive instead.

bought mine for both reasons as well.and the third reason is the wife wont drive it its too fast and she's scared of marking it,an even better reason for mods.
