Intermittent petrol smell from top right engine
Hi All
Around 5 months ago I noticed a smell of petrol in the cabin when I stopped at lights or in slow traffic.
On inspection the smell was very strong around top right of the engine block.
Nothing obvious, no leaks etc. Took to MRC and they tightened a few connections and it initially sorted it, then it came back and then went again a couple of days later.
Some 4 months later its back, still cant see anything obvious, other than a pipe that's come off, see picture. Pipe split so on order and MRC are doing in a couple of weeks. ( not sure what this is but told its not fuel related )
Just wondering if anyone has had the petrol issue or has any thoughts.
I have found something about a plastic fuel quick disconnect pipe !, MRC again going to look at.
Any thought appreciated
Steve

I had a fuel leak on the top left of the engine bay which was that plastic disconnect you mentioned. There's plenty of either rubber or metal fuel lines in the top right of the engine, anyone of which could be the source of the leak -

Hi Ian
Appreciate the info.
Already had 3 hours labour at MRC to find the issue, hopefully they will track it down this time.

Re: Intermittent petrol smell from top right engine
I've smelled petrol a few times recently, usually when I've gone close to the car a few minutes after I've parked it up. This morning whilst once again chasing my tail trying to find out why every so often the thing lays down smoke like the Red Arrows during a display I found this blister weeping fuel:

I remember you peeled back the plastic on yours Ian, how was your leak fixed?

Update: The plastic coating on the pipe had lifted all the way to the end of the pipe and cracked in a couple of places. Removed it and now unsurprisingly it's leaking a lot. Next job will be to temporarily replace the quick-release fitting with a piece of hard line and some high pressure fuel pipe so I can use the car.

Re: Intermittent petrol smell from top right engine
To my logic I think I'm going to need a replacement fuel feed pipe as I think that without the plastic coating the pipe won't seal inside the quick release fitting.
Marvellous - the fuel pipes into the engine compartment are short units, so can be replaced without having to go all the way back to the fuel tank.
It's not as good as it sounds though, the feed pipe is only available as an assembly with the return/breather pipe and a load of brackets.

Hi Jim,
Mine was just the quick release itself leaking, which allowed fuel to get under the plastic and make it bubble, rather than a crack in the pipework causing the leak.

Re: Intermittent petrol smell from top right engine
My pipe is still in one piece, it's just missing the coating so sealing is a bit marginal, especially when theres vibration thrown into the mix. Luckily I can go without the car until the new parts arrive. Might have a look around to see if I can find somewhere that can apply a new coating, that way I'd have a spare in case it should happen again.
