Ahhh! Cracked windscreen!

Post by GlynRS2 » Tue Jun 02, 2020 6:59 am

Got a stone chip on my windscreen yesterday evening and this morning have woken to a large crack that has developed overnight.
Car has HUD and matrix lights so will need a special screen and callibration etc.
Any advice before I give Aviva a call to arrange replacement?

Ahhh! Cracked windscreen!

Happened to me whilst driving across Europe last year. A clamp came off a car roof rack @ 70+ mph, ricocheted off the bonnet into the windscreen... one hell of a crack...

Tip1 - make absolutely sure its a genuine Audi windscreen - ie for you car, with HUD & Matrix (same as mine) I believe the screen is made in Germany by Pilkington Glass. I was quoted 5-7 day delivery, but it arrived within 2 days. Be prepared to wait. Originally quoted a different screen with an in stock item but made them aware of various in screen sensors. I checked the part numbers on the cracked screen & the new one whilst the work was done.

Tip2 - Aviva will stipulate their own approved list of windscreen contractors. Make sure you select a good one from that list, the closest might not be the most reputable, so advise check their customer ratings. It will be about the skill of the person carrying out the the fit & more importantly, the recalibration... otherwise cruise control, matrix lights, anti-collision sensors, etc, could possibly be out of calibration.

Tip3 - take a good look around the windscreen seal for marks & inspect again after the new screen has been fitted.

Note: the bonding agent that is used in the seal does take some time to cure.

Good luck!

Alex
Ps. I don’t work in the windscreen business Image, enjoy the car ImageImage

Yes a special screen is required and a non genuine audi one will give you adistired HUD image. Pilki glass is good. some insurance policies cover recalibration for sensors and others dont. lat time i checked Autoglass wanted £250+ vat to recalibrate and Audi wanted £200 so do some research if your bothered.

Thanks for the advice. I had a feeling their could be some challenges. Luckily I don't need to use the car for next week, so will do some research and have all the information to hand when I make the call.
