7.5 performance coolant level/use

Post by Joe1199 » Mon Jun 24, 2019 8:00 am

I have a 2018 PE, has now done nearly 8000 miles but I noticed yesterday that the coolant level is getting close to
The low level on the header tank.

Sometimes when i get out of the car and it is hot I can slightly smell coolant but I had an S3 and I seem to remember this being the same

I have no record of the level when I bought the car,
It was just lower than expected when I looked

Any possible reasons for this?

I have checked the common rupture point at the rear of the engine and it is well clear

Thanks

Mine (pre FL) has always been nearer the minimum than maximum but has never moved.

Should coolant be changed at a regular interval?

An other coolant leak source is often the in and outlet of the coolant pipes on both turbos. Easy to find out if you remove engine cover and have a look at the 3 pipes coming out the turbo's. The two outer ones are coolant, inner is oil (+ 1 oil line underneat but not visible). The pipes have a rubber o-ring witch then to wear out due to heat and start to leak. Visually very noticable if it has a wet spot around it or started building dark crusty carbon...

Thanks for the replies, would be a little disappointed if it was a leak from something other than hitting something on one of the rads etc as the car is barely a year old!

Another thought I had which could be similar to the issue above is that it has always been at that level and I didn’t notice, or perhaps there was an airlock which released over time?

I have topped it up and will keep an eye on it

Pretty sure mine used to use a little coolant over time. Not a lot but maybe enough to give it a little top up once in three years.

If topping up make sure you get the right stuff, think it’s G13.
