Wheel advice needed please
Wheel advice needed please
I've just had a nightmare afternoon...
Long and the short, I'm needing a new wheel, after taking to a tyre place with a nail, they inform me I've got two cracks on the inner edge of the wheel (rear offside).
How, when & where... haven't got a clue.
I'm also aware of another wheel needing work to it, so I'm thinking about my options
i) replace 2 x with original Audi wheels
ii) change 4 x with after market wheels (ideally with same tyres)
iii) get the two wheels repaired (wielded)
Wheels on the car are 21", car's a 2013
Any help or advice would be really appreciated right now, I'm after a quick, but long term fix, poxy bank holiday weekend doesn't help me much either...
Thanks in advance

Re: Wheel advice needed please
Hearing so many stories of failed alloys on the c7, I'd be going after market mate. I wouldn't waste money on new oem or getting them repaired cause the others may fail at some point.
How about RS6Chris' wheels for sale in the classifieds (I assume they'll fit the C7)

Thanks, I'm thinking along the same lines.chunky79 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 29, 2017 3:06 pmHearing so many stories of failed alloys on the c7, I'd be going after market mate. I wouldn't waste money on new oem or getting them repaired cause the others may fail at some point.

I'll look at Chris's, thanks for the heads up

Re: Wheel advice needed please
Abt has nice wheels 21 and 22 inch
Re: Wheel advice needed please
Yeah I'd go aftermarket rather than 2 more OEM wheels. Lots of options including Chris's wheels which were from his first C7 and must only be about a month old.
The standard 285/30/20 tyres will fit on wheels up to 10.5" wide.

Go aftermarket. I have standard size tyres on 10.5 wheels.

Re: Wheel advice needed please
AFAIK the standard 20inch dished alloys have given no trouble whatsoever, the probs being confined to the optional 21 inch items. Therefore you could fit these assuming you are using steel brakes and not the ceramics
Re: Wheel advice needed please
Yes, oddly, the standard wheels are forged. Very light and very strong. Just not as aggressive looking (though i like the dish) as 21s.

Re: Wheel advice needed please
Are you sure? I was told by my dealer they were not and that was one reason they were causing trouble. They are certainly much heavier - more than 10kg (with tyres)a set - than 20s. Of course you would expect the 21 combo to be heavier but that is a big difference.
Edited to add: seems I am not the only one told they are cast.

Looking at Audi broushure http://imageshack.com/a/img924/8802/7U0li2.jpg only ones are forged and they are 20 inch
But still strange how those 21 inch can be broken if you not hit a pot hole or have someone driving into you or not hitting to some hard object
Re: Wheel advice needed please
FWIW, I fully understand the aesthetics that some state for choosing the 21s, I specified 20s in early 2016 for the simple reason I can use Bridgestone S001 when I need replacement rubber. That was before the strange crack issues surfaced on some of the 21s so I guess I was lucky.
Re: Wheel advice needed please
I think I'd go aftermarket if I found any of mine to be faulty. That is if audi didn't replace them... Still not clear on whether that an option or not and whether its warranty related.
In reality with the amount of issues in what is a cost options, they should have forge them and done a recall or give upto 4 replacements for every set purchased.
Whilst I know it's an issue I'll still be extremely fed up when it happens!!

Re: Wheel advice needed please
Excuse my ignorance but what's so special about the Bridgestone? I went 20s for durability as live in rural area with rough roads.Nigelo2 wrote: ↑Wed May 03, 2017 8:14 pmFWIW, I fully understand the aesthetics that some state for choosing the 21s, I specified 20s in early 2016 for the simple reason I can use Bridgestone S001 when I need replacement rubber. Re: Wheel advice needed please
Not Bridgestone per se but the S001s developed for Ferrari's 458 Italia. I did back to back testing between Pirelli P zero and S001 for many miles on both my A6 avant 3.0 TDI Quattro and again on my Maserati 3200. Both had 4 wheel alignment carried out on each set.. The difference was huge once the tyres had a few miles on them with the S001 being more compliant, higher grip, and faster more responsive turn in. Downside is higher wear but I can live with that
