Ceramics....

Post by vestax32 » Wed Mar 23, 2016 10:59 am

Will be buying a used c7 soon, and was wondering if I get one with ceramics, and they go wrong, and Audi won't replace under warranty, is it easy enough to change to steels? What's involved? And how much would it cost?

Would and has put me off buying cars with ceramics. I think the cost to replace is just too high for little real benefit or it is for me at least - I must qualify.

Some people find the £6k price tag is worth it for lack of brake dust and less tramlining on motorways. I've been tempted by them (and still am occasionally!) but I've never run out of brakes with the steels despite track use. I'm told that's because I'm a pussy but... Meh. ;)

IMO ceramics are good for three reasons:

1: almost zero brake dust
2: they look really cool
3: almost zero brake dust

I can't honestly say I can't notice the difference in braking myself although apart from when I went out for a test drive with Sam we did an 80-0 brake test and I felt like my eyeballs were coming out, but what I do know is when I get home after a run the wheels do not need cleaning and my OCD used to mean a quick spritz to make sure the car went away with clean wheels......worth the money alone.

£6k is the price for the B8 as they only have ceramics at the front. The C7 has them at the rear too so pretty much double the price (although they can be had for a lot less if you know the right people).

Im sure I have heard about people speccing them on the C7, Audi replacing cracked/broken discs once, but then refusing to do it a second time? Is this not something to worry about? Do the discs supposedly last 150k?

The best private quote I got for them was €14,000.
€12,500 if I give the normal breaks in return.

If you drive it like an A6 then probably but if you drive it like a RS6 then nowhere near :D

Oh and forget about doing trackdays too due to the risk of the extended heat soak wrecking the discs and having to spend £6k on new ones!

Well ceramics are good but I must say my DS2500's and AP discs stopped me smashing into a a German women in a Beatle last year who moved over to let me by at over 160MPH on the 555 (unrestricted Autobahn) into Cologne, then pulled back out as soon as she saw my UK plate. My god I stood on my brakes and I stopped within inches of her.

I pulled into the Aral garage and she followed me in. I jumped out and I have never given such a bollocking to a women in my life like I did to her. I really should have punched her face in. I was so angry
