Waiting on an RS6 Performance

Post by robf » Sun Feb 21, 2016 5:56 pm

Hi all,

Last night i found the forum off the back of a Google Image search and spent about an hour sifting through various threads! Since i ordered the car, i've watched just about every YouTube clip possible and have spent far much time Googling but sadly there is precious little talked about the Performance edition - until i found RS246.com!

Anyway, back in November i had my daily driver - an Audi A5 - stolen via the OBD port method. The upside is that i got to go car searching and, with money in the back from a sold 997 GT3, i thought i'd go for an RS6. After a few trips to the configurator i suddenly noticed the Performance edition. I was initially against it, as it looked poor value, but eventually the Man Maths took over and i went for it.

Colour was a tough call but was eventually swayed by an all black look. Was pretty annoyed to find you can't spec the gloss black styling pack with black paint though so was forced to go for the closest alternative - the carbon fibre styling pack at considerable cost! Other than the B&O stereo and advanced key (over security concerns), i have basically gone for every other option. I winced at the carbon brakes but they just looked too good to ignore!

Look forward to wasting more time on the forum and getting some photos up when the car arrives in late April! I have immediate plans to lower the car to really make the most of those big arches. Very excited! :beerchug:

Welcome, and wow that's a big spec. I ummed and ahhed over the Titan trim or carbon and and tried to change to carbon but was too late. Now its here I quite like the Titan, only time will tell if it stays or gets changed for carbon.
I have my lowering Springs already, maybe try and get it booked in for them to be fitted this week. I wanted to run the car in and make sure the suspension was ok on full load before changing it and this weekend I hit over 700 miles total so csn now floor it. Bloody hell it quick, 100mph comes up in a blink of an eye.

Thanks for the welcome! I read through your thread Mike and did find it funny that i had found someone with a very similar car; jealous you already have yours!

What springs did you go for? Was impressed with H&Rs on my A5 as it made no difference to ride quality whatsoever. I did a quick search and didn't find many options for the RS6 though.

I found 4 options (just springs, not coilovers). H&R 20mm, H&R 400mm, KW adjustable springs or Gepfeffert mega low springs (made by KW I believe).
I went for the H&R 400mm option as I like it low but as low as the gepfeffert option.

Dealer phoned me last week and told me mine was now built so I am waiting for the delivery chain to complete.

I took the standing that the car was pretty highly spec'd already. In Performance Edition form the key parts I was looking to add were already pre-loaded into the Spec + a mini remap from the factory.

Slightly Noisy Exhaust
Dark Windows for the drug dealer look
21" kerb kissing alloys (I went 21 PE Y 5 Spoke in Black)

I added

Hands free door/boot opening - I have a metal box for the keys at night (money)
Alcantara cross stitch interior. I don't like the hexagonal design for some reason. (Free option on PE)
This caused the Carbon interior to loose the blue fleck, not a big thing
As I chose the Panther Black exterior colour the Black trim was not available. I guess it needs some contrast but I would have probably gone with it as well.

The additional equipment on the PE is included so makes the PCP simpler. In theory this is better protected in the GFV over options which are valued over the PCP term only and so increase the cost more but not the value. Given the aggressive discounts around I do feel the GFV will take a bit of a whack at some point. There does appear to be stock and available order slots around so that bubble is looking vulnerable. I guess the PE might have a little more halo effect but it is a standard (not short run) model and so I doubt it will gain any real additional value based on that. The other real benefit is mentioned by the others. No messing with the insurance or warranty for the "map" and exhaust. I suspect the exhaust will niggle me as it is a little weak after the E63AMG which had a glorious exhaust noise. Then again I expect to spend less on tyres and not look at the "you have no traction" light anymore.

I went with the Air Suspension as I am only going to use it on the road and with the 21" rubber would prefer the comfort for travel. I came out of an E63AMG estate which was steel front and air rear. Strangely I never had reason to even think about it. I suspect I will use the VCDS to lower the air a little once I am confident.

The test drive was quite interesting. I only intended to give it a little run but the damn thing was like a rabid stabbed rat. One good sneeze and you can change counties if you art not careful. Its going to be a bit of a weapon I suspect. Get that damn ferry moving....

I went with the dynamic suspension after watching Chris Harris' review. I really trust his opinion and he said the suspension was good so went for (plus i wanted th carbon brakes anyway).

So this means i'll be the third person with a black PE - a bit slow to the party !

Whatever the optional pearl one is!

I've just thought of a question. I have specced a heated steering wheel which means it's not as sporty looking. I am OK with this but have now heard i miss out on some dial to switch settings? Would you happen to hav a picture of yours Mike?

The heated steering wheel button replaces the "Customiser button" on the steering wheel, which i slabelled with a *. In standard cars, that button toggles voice control on/off, radio / media, and something else (the voice control on/off is actually incredibly useful). On the PE that button changes the drive dynamics mode instead (Comfort > Dynamic > Auto > Individual) - I guess it cycles through them? Anyway, that's the button you don't have.

I don't have a picture of it yet... oddly I haven't taken any interior shots or under bonnet shots yet. I can take one tonight though.
The heated steering wheel is round and not flat bottomed, that was the reason why I didn't get it.
But Wildbore is right, the normal RS6 fave button is used as the heating button but on the PE it is used to toggle the Drive Select. Whilst you may not think this button is important, you will soon realise that although the car starts in Dynamic mode (assuming you turned it off in Dynamic mode) it is not actually in dynamic mode until you cycle all through the modes and get back to dynamic. Very annoying, and without the Drive Select button on the steering wheel you will need to change it using the MMI (press the car button on the centre console and navigate to the mode you want or just press OK to reselect dynamic).

Having had mine for a few weeks now anyone considering spec should definitely get as many cameras as they can, I love it but god its a barge when low speed manoeuvring and I don't have any cameras so end up needing four acres for a parking space.

Sounds like a great spec, I also went with Black, Black, Carbon and Black!

I ordered mine on 22nd Jan and build week is 4th April, seems like a long time for the build to start.

When did you place your order and when is your build week?

Cheers
